MARGARET

"Incongruous, Annoying Character Drama"

What You Need To Know:

MARGARET is a plodding character drama about a young woman whose life spirals out of control. Lisa Cohen is a college student. Her days are filled with flirting with the boys, attending international studies classes where she argues American politics in the Middle East, and hours arguing with her mother, a well-known stage actress. One day she flirts with a bus driver who loses his concentration and runs over a woman. Initially, Lisa lies in her police report to protect the bus driver with whom she was flirting. However, as Lisa’s emotional life spirals out of control, her conscience compels her to retract her statement to the police and pursue a class-action lawsuit to get the bus driver off the road.

MARGARET is an incongruous, emotional character drama riddled with plot problems and story inconsistencies. The movie plods its way through Lisa’s emotional inner story in the most boring – and even annoying – ways. MARGARET has a very strong, mixed pagan worldview with plenty of strong foul language. It also has an abundance of lewd and salacious content, plus some drug abuse. Happily, MARGARET is only playing in limited release.

More Detail:

MARGARET is a bizarre, incongruous, pagan character study that follows a 17-year-old girl whose life spirals out of control after she witnesses a brutal bus accident that takes a woman’s life.

Lisa Cohen (Anna Paquin) is a precocious high school student. Her days are filled with flirting with boys, social studies classes where she argues with a young Persian woman about American politics in the Middle East, and arguing with her mother who is a well-known, New York stage actress.

That is, until, Lisa is witness to – and even somewhat of an accomplice to – a horrible bus accident. Standing on the street side, she distracts the attention of a bus driver who loses his concentration, drives through a red light, and runs over a woman.

Lisa holds the woman’s hand as she slowly bleeds out and dies. Those few minutes are life-altering for Lisa. Initially, she lies in her police report in order to protect the bus driver with whom she was flirting. However, as the weeks after the incident pass, and as Lisa’s emotional life spirals out of control, her conscience compels her to retract her statement to the police and pursue a class-action lawsuit with the dead woman’s best friend to get the bus driver off the road.

Throughout the movie, Lisa’s emotional drama takes her from drug-addled sexual deviance with a co-classmate to fighting with her emotionally distant mother; from seducing her teacher into an illicit sexual relationship to claiming she has had an abortion. As she struggles with her crisis of conscience, everyone in her life is fair game for her emotional outbursts.

MARGARET is an incongruous, emotional character drama riddled with plot problems and story inconsistencies. The movie plods its way through Lisa’s emotional inner story in the most boring – and even annoying – ways. The movie has garnered some critical claim but on no merit other than most people’s lack of consistent critical thinking.

MARGARET has a very strong, mixed pagan worldview with plenty of strong foul language and an abundance of strong, sexual content, including several scenes of depicted and implied fornication and nudity. The movie has some drug use and incredibly strong miscellaneous immorality, including disrespect to parents. Even though there’s a mild message of a teenager’s conscience driving her to tell the truth, the movie ultimately is a moral mess with no redeeming content. Thankfully, most media-wise audiences will be able to ignore the profane, character-driven mess that’s MARGARET, because it’s only scheduled for a limited release, despite the names attached to the project.
