What You Need To Know:
The plot of THEY CAME TOGETHER is thin, but intentionally so. That’s because the main purpose is satirizing predictable conventions of Hollywood romantic comedies. There are some smart jokes throughout the story. Much of the movie is composed of relatively clean humor but it also contains lots of strong crude language and two quick yet rather graphic lewd scenes. THEY CAME TOGETHER misses the mark because of its excessive, unacceptable lewd content. Romantic comedies are ripe for a really good, clean satire, but this isn’t it.
Content:
(PaPaPa, Ro, B, Cap, LLL, VV, SSS, NN, A, MM) Very strong, mixed pagan worldview with light Romantic and moral elements in satire/spoof of romantic comedies where people pursue personal happiness and relationships without God and including some raunchy content, but marriage is eventually extolled in the end (one character makes fun of his own marriage in a sometimes mean way but says he’s only kidding), plus light capitalist content; at least 39 obscenities and profanities (including several “f” words and a GD); comical violence and peril such as a man crashes through an office skyscraper window while trying to catch a football and then hangs from a high ledge, female lead character is clumsy and has several ridiculous stumbles and mishaps, woman gets a bloody nose when football hits her in the face, and (in the strongest violent scene) woman’s convict ex-husband squares off in a fight against her new boyfriend using a metal pipe and punching, and a policeman eventually arrests the convict and shoots him dead in a non-graphic fashion meant to be funny; very strong sexual content overall (mostly intended for laughs; also, the actual sex scenes are rather brief) such as male protagonist hugs his grandmother, and they kiss romantically, and he starts to lift her skirt but they suddenly act shocked, and he runs out the door, man fornicates with his ex-girlfriend in silhouette in a series of comically ridiculous positions, protagonist appears not to notice sex sounds of girlfriend cheating on him, some lewd references in dialogue, and another scene of attempted fornication, but couple falls asleep onto bed and wakes up with nothing apparently happening; brief rear female nudity, upper male nudity, and shadow nudity where details aren’t revealed; casual and implied alcohol use; no smoking or drugs; and, co-worker betrays male protagonist, and people treat being cheated on in a very casual manner (this is part of the intended comedy).
More Detail:
THEY CAME TOGETHER is an occasionally raunchy, sometimes clever satire of romantic comedies featuring a romance between a corporate candy store executive and the owner of a tiny candy shop endangered by the bigger company. THEY CAME TOGETHER has a strong mixed worldview with little redemptive content and excessive lewd content, though marriage seems to be extolled at the end.
The movie follows the story of Joel (Paul Rudd) and Molly (Amy Poehler), as they tell the story of their romance to a married couple of friends (Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper) over dinner. Joel works as an executive at a giant candy company that wants a monopoly on the New York City candy market, while Molly owns a quirky little candy store.
Joel and Molly meet through friends at a Halloween party but soon realize they are rivals, as Joel’s company wants to open a superstore across from hers. This, of course, upsets Molly. Thus begins an up and down romance where Joel briefly returns to his ex-girlfriend along the way before Molly and he realize they’re perfect together.
The plot of THEY CAME TOGETHER is thin, but intentionally so, because the movie’s main purpose is to satirize the predictable conventions of countless Hollywood romantic comedies. There are some smart jokes throughout that poke fun at the ridiculousness of the various situations onscreen. Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd play their characters perfectly, seeming like regular romantic comedy actors on the surface while slyly satirizing everything at the same time.
Much if not most of the movie is composed of relatively innocent humor, but the R rating is well deserved for strong crude language and two quick yet rather graphic and offensive, comically intended sex scenes. The characters have a lax moral attitude to premarital sex and cheating as well, even though they wind up married. There’s also plenty of foul language, including some “f” words and lewd verbal jokes. Despite the fight between a corporate man and a small-business-owning woman, the movie steers clear of any politicizing. Finally, the ending seems to extol the idea of marriage, though it does so in a comical, satirical setting or tone. Other than this, the characters pursue personal, amoral happiness apart from God or any religious faith.
Ultimately, THEY CAME TOGETHER misses the mark because of its lewd content, which is excessive and unacceptable. Romantic comedies are ripe for a really good, clean satire, but this isn’t it.
