X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE

"Revenge Struggles"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE tells how Logan, aka Wolverine of the X-Men, lost his memory battling General Stryker, the villain in X2: X-MEN UNITED. A family tragedy in 1845 forces Logan and his older teenage mutant half-brother, Victor, to flee their home in the Northwest Territory of Canada. After a century of fighting and surviving various wars, Logan and Victor join a special team of mutants working for American General Stryker. Logan tires of the group’s brutality, especially Victor’s bloodlust, so he quits. Logan hides away in a lumbering community with his new lover, Kayla Silverfox. General Stryker and Victor, however, won’t let him live in peace. When Victor kills Kayla, Stryker offers Logan a chance to get revenge.

WOLVERINE is a rousing, passionate action flick. WOLVERINE does not lack for action, but it is also a tragic romance, so it may appeal to female audiences as well as teenage boys. That said, Logan’s relationship with Kayla could use more development and some action scenes seem repetitious. The movie has a moral worldview, spoiled, however, by some very strong fight scenes and plenty of foul language. Consequently, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.

More Detail:

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE is a rousing, passionate action flick, but it has very strong violent moments and plenty of foul language.

The story tells how Logan, aka Wolverine of the X-Men, lost his memory battling General Stryker, the villain in X2: X-MEN UNITED. It opens in 1845 in the Northwest Territory of Canada, where a drunken murder results in a double family tragedy. This forces young Logan and his older teenage half-brother, Victor, to flee their home. Both boys are mutants with extraordinary powers to heal themselves and fight. Logan can summon razor-like claws from his knuckles, while Victor’s fingernails are retractable claws.

After a century of fighting in various wars, Logan and Victor become part of a special team of fighting mutants working for American General William Stryker. Logan tires of the team’s brutality, especially Victor’s bloodlust, and so he quits.

Logan hides away in a lumbering community with his lover, Kayla Silverfox. One day, however, General Stryker comes to inform him that, since he left, Stryker’s team fell apart, and now Victor is hunting down the other members of the team and killing them. When Victor kills Kayla, Stryker offers Logan a chance to get his revenge. Stryker says he can make him virtually invincible by surgically covering his bones, including his claws, with an unbreakable steel compound called adamantium.

Logan undergoes the transformation but learns that Stryker wants to take control of his new fighting machine by erasing his memory. Logan escapes and has to prevent Stryker from re-capturing him while he hunts down his evil half-brother. There are more secrets, however, for Logan to uncover. This leads to a daring rescue and an ultimate fight with the ultimate fighting mutant, a creature called Deadpool.

WOLVERINE does not lack for action, but it is also a tragic romance, so it may have just as much emotional appeal for female audiences as well as for teenage boys. That said, the movie could have used a couple scenes in the first act showing how Logan meets Kayla and why they have such a strong attraction in the first place. Also, some action scenes in the third act seem somewhat repetitious.

Morally, the story focuses on two things: the battle that Logan has in controlling his rage, especially his rage for revenge, and the battle he has in fighting the evil schemes of General Stryker. Eventually, Logan overcomes his own bloodlust, but not without a cost. Also, in battling General Stryker and Victor, Logan is able to free some innocent mutants on which Stryker is conducting experiments.

These positive aspects, however, are marred by some very strong combat scenes and plenty of foul language, including some gratuitous profanities. Also, while the movie’s main moral dilemmas are resolved somewhat positively, there are darker elements left hanging. Consequently, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.
