Review:

EXPIRED is the story of Claire (played by Samantha Morton), a lonely, kind meter maid who meets Jay (played by Jason Patric), hoping for a solution to her disappointing life. Claire’s job is stressful as people yell and curse at her for giving them parking tickets. This is the part of the job she really hates.

Jay, a fellow parking officer, enjoys the conflict and goes out of his way to antagonize. Though very different, Jay and Claire begin to date as Claire considers if dating a guy who is angry and insulting is better than not dating anyone at all. Claire’s disabled mother (played by Teri Garr) dies, and so Jay and Claire encounter the only other relative, the mother’s twin sister, also played by Teri Garr.

When Jay, who is clearly a sex addict, is caught with a prostitute, Claire decides to leave him, finding meaning in hope for the future and a promotion at work. It is a victory for Claire to not put up with a verbally abusive boyfriend.

EXPIRED is very mixed, much like the character Jay. At times, there’s comedy and the characters begin to grow on you. Then, the movie turns dark and the characters become distant. The character of Jay is unique in that he is a recovering drug addict who once was studying astrophysics, but now is attempting to learn to have real relationships instead of sexual fantasies online. While at times it looks like he might succeed in that, he ultimately doesn’t.

The movie does have some charm. Claire is a character that viewers want to see do well in the story. Claire does speak of trying to do the right thing and take the high road when Jay is often quick to rage. There is much foul language and really vulgar scenes, however, when Jay is viewing pornography online.

There’s not much to commend about EXPIRED. It’s not dramatic enough to be a drama and not funny enough to be a comedy. There are many other, more enjoyable romantic comedies that you can find on www.movieguide.org.
