NEFARIOUS: MERCHANT OF SOULS

"The Exponential Increase of Sexual Slavery and Trafficking"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

NEFARIOUS is a powerful documentary about human trafficking and sex slavery. The movie begins by pointing out that slavery has not been banished from the world, but is on the increase. Even worse, the vast majority of slavery is sexual slavery. The movie follows young women from the remote farming villages in Moldova and other formerly Communist countries who are kidnapped or entrapped by a handsome young man with promises of a real job and real money in Moscow and other places, then sold into slavery. The movie tastefully recreates some of the horrors the women go through. It interviews psychologists, social workers, ex Johns, pimps, and the women themselves. At the end, the women give the only answer to this horrible problem – Jesus Christ.

NEFARIOUS is one of the most powerful, compelling and transformational documentaries ever. It is absolutely incredible that the filmmakers could have done a full-length feature movie on sexual slavery and the sex trade industry with so much honesty, integrity and powerful footage while avoiding nudity, salaciousness, and temptation. So, the movie stands as a testimony that these topics can be addressed without stooping to conquer.

Content:

The movie begins by pointing out that slavery has not been banished from the world, but is on the increase, and 50% of the slavery is sexual slavery. In fact, the movie points out that:

27 million people are enslaved around the world.

NEFARIOUS follows young women from the remote farming villages in Moldova and other formerly Communist countries, who are kidnapped or entrapped by a handsome young man with promises of a real job and real money in Moscow and other places, then sold into slavery. The movie recreates the kidnapping and recreates the evil, violent conditioning into sex slavery where the young girl is isolated in a room for days at a time, beaten, forced to submit, and thoroughly psychologically abused until they become a slave of the pimp. The movie traces these girls as they go through Serbia and Croatia, then into sex markets in Amsterdam, Berlin, then into Las Vegas. It also covers the large sex trade in Thailand.

The numbers of girls, young children and young boys taken and forced into sex slavery are incredible. It’s estimated that 27 million people are enslaved around the world, two million of them children. Of the 800,000 people trafficked across international borders each year, 80% are women and children forced into sex slavery.

The interviews in NEFARIOUS are heartbreaking. The revelations from those running the sex establishments are infuriating. Psychologists, social workers and others clearly explain the dynamics of sex trafficking and slavery. Ex Johns and pimps discuss the problem. And, finally, prostitutes themselves discuss the horror of physical abuse and even attempted murder.

The movie’s ending is extremely and particularly powerful and insightful. It presents the only answer: Jesus Christ, who has freed many of these interviewees from the evils of sex slavery.

All this said, NEFARIOUS is a documentary. Therefore, there is some repetition. Also, some parts are not as compelling as others. Overall, however, NEFARIOUS is incredibly well filmed, carefully edited and powerfully produced. The filmmakers should be commended.

NEFARIOUS is must viewing. It was interesting the number of Las Vegas prostitutes who said they though they would get a better life as prostitutes, because they had seen PRETTY WOMAN.

It is clear throughout the movie that the Playboy culture has corrupted the moral fabric of society. While the work of the slavery abolitionists in the 1800s, such as William Wilberforce and John Newton, was driven by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and thus liberated (as the Gospel does) women from women’s prisons and Africans from slavery, it is clear that the turning away from the Gospel toward the lust of the eyes and the lust of the flesh is throwing the world back into an evil bondage that should be repulsive to anyone but is capturing the hearts and minds of too many of the younger generation.

Telemachus jumped into the gladiatorial arena and yelled, Stop!” His martyrdom stopped the evil of the gladiatorial games. MOVIEGUIDE® hopes NEFARIOUS will do the same for the sex industry. The byword is, “Let my people go. Set them free from this bondage.”
