TRANSAMERICA

TRANSAMERICA is a low-budget comedy whose main character is a man in Los Angeles planning to finalize his sex change operation to a woman.

Played by an actual actress, Bree is a timid transsexual who’s still a little uncomfortable about making the final transition to womanhood. Bree’s therapist learns from Bree that Bree’s real life son, Toby, whom Bree never knew existed, has been picked up in New York City for male prostitution. The therapist withholds legal permission for Bree’s final surgery until Bree meets with her son in New York and deals with her past.

Bree meets Toby but can’t bring herself to reveal the truth to him. Instead, she poses as a female Christian missionary who rescues street people to convert them. Toby tells her that he plans to jump bail and hitchhike to L.A. to break into X-rated videos and search for his real father. Bree panics and offers Toby a ride across country, secretly planning to abandon him with the stepfather in Kentucky Toby ran away from after his mother died.

A comical and eventually heartbreaking journey ensues.

Felicity Huffman gives a brilliant, convincing and funny performance as Bree even though Felicity has been a woman all her life. Graham Greene is also good as a potential love interest for Bree. The rest of the movie is uneven, however, including the film makeup on Bree’s face. In fact, a few scenes are actually quite disgusting and gratuitous, including Toby’s interest in making homosexual porn movies. Toby actually carries out his intent to act in such movies, and Bree doesn’t judge him for it.

Thus, despite attempts to appear like a mainstream movie, TRANSAMERICA eventually succumbs to the sleazy kind of material that nearly all of the homosexual movement’s movies seem to contain. These people are preaching to the choir. Regrettably, more than just the choir is listening. Movies like TRANSAMERICA ultimately may show why homosexuality, cross dressing and transsexuality are evil and perverted, but many viewers will be too stupid, deceived and apathetic to notice.

One question never seems to get answered concerning the issue of sex changes. Why should we put more stock in the transsexual’s subjective desires to change their sex, when God has already clearly provided them with the objective, physical accoutrements of what their sex truly should be? Instead of a sex change, psychological and spiritual counselors perhaps should prescribe some kind of hormone treatments for these poor, misguided souls, and bring them to the moral truth that can only be found in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. After all, if transsexuals have to take hormones to change their sex, why can’t they take hormones to keep their sex the way it is? Sex change operations don’t seem to make a lick of sense, except in cases of actual physical deformity and abnormality. It may be, however, that some kind of hormone therapy needs to be instituted in many allegedly transsexual children well before and/or during puberty, to ensure that their mental and emotional state will indeed conform to their actual physical bodies.

Still, we strongly suggest that transsexuals and their supporters are suffering from some kind of mental and emotional confusion. Jesus, of course, specializes in clearing away the cobwebs of such confusion and disorder. He is always the Ultimate Answer for all our troubles.
