AMERICAN REUNION

What You Need To Know:

AMERICAN REUNION is the third AMERICAN PIE sequel, not counting the video releases. The movie opens by crudely showing that Jim and Michele are having marital problems. From that point forward, the story’s basically one giant orgy, full of underage drinking, casual sex, adultery, homosexual life partners, fornicating with a friend’s mom, and partying. Of course, there’s the semblance of a happy ending. Jim and Michele save their marriage and start having sexual relations again. Also, the boys rekindle their friendship at their 13th high school reunion (they missed the 10th one).

Little has changed with the AMERICAN PIE franchise. Except that it’s gotten more crude and less funny. It continues to subject moviegoers with the same old jokes and raunchiness -- repeatedly. In fact, the ending leads to the suspicion that Jim and Michele haven’t really fixed the problems in their marriage. Thus, the problems that began the movie are just as likely to come back to haunt them. AMERICAN REUNION is an abhorrent movie masquerading as a comedy. It promotes an immoral, mixed Romantic, pagan, humanist worldview with no moral rudder. Don’t soil your brain with AMERICAN REUNION.

Content:

(PaPaPa, RoRoRo, HHH, PCPC, HoHo, LLL, V, SSS, NNN, AAA, DD, MMM) Very strong, intense mixed pagan worldview, dominated by Romanticism and humanism, with the dominant Epicurean mentality of anything goes in a world crazed by sex (or the lack thereof in marriage), plus strong politically correct homosexual references, including to same-sex marriage; at least 47 obscenities (mostly “f” and “s” words) and 10 mostly strong profanities; light action violence when a character intentionally destroys jet skis, as well as fist fighting and a car crash; very strong sexual content includes nearly constant references to sex and adultery, adultery, at least one adult encourages other adults to take advantage of girls and sleep with high school students, married couple masturbates separately in bathroom and bedroom to porn, married couple has sex in bathroom at friend’s party, married man wakes up in bed with another woman, man proposes wife swap to other man, character has sexual relations with his friend’s mother on football field, homosexual couple kisses and plans wedding, man gives woman oral sex in bathroom at party and shot shows pubic hairs on his face afterwards, and multiple other sexual innuendoes; full frontal and back male nudity with close-up shot on penis as well as almost full frontal female nudity (teenage high school student throws herself at adult wearing only a thong and then is transported into her parents’ house by him completely naked); excessive drinking, drunkenness, and underage teenage drinking at parties to take advantage of girls; use of illegal drugs by adults and teenagers with joint and water bong in use on screen; scores of adultery, and, very strong miscellaneous immorality includes deceit, lying, poor role models, and dysfunctional families, with very little of any redemptive value – save one comment by a teenager near the end that (after undressing and throwing herself at the protagonist) she now understands that she “should really wait for someone special.”

More Detail:

Don’t rush to see AMERICAN REUNION, the third AMERICAN PIE sequel (not counting the video releases). If you’re lucky, it will be out of theatres as quickly as it came into them, and you’ll be able to pretend it never happened. AMERICAN REUNION is an abhorrent movie masquerading as a comedy. In fact, it does nothing but promote highly Romantic and/or humanist views of life, practically meaningless friendship, and extremely dysfunctional family behavior.

It’s time for the AMERICAN PIE characters class reunion. They missed the 10th so it’s technically the 13th. Jim (Jason Biggs), Michele (Alyson Hannigan), and the gang roll back into town for a long weekend. Viewers realize from the beginning that a lot is amiss in Jim and Michele’s marriage. Although blessed with a child, they’re stuck in a rut. While he abuses himself to online porn in the bedroom as his son walks in to interrupt him, she’s at work abusing herself with the shower hose in the bathroom.

From that point forward, the story’s basically one giant orgy, full of underage drinking, sex, homosexual life partners, fornicating with a friend’s mom, and partying. We’ll spare readers the details – having to see them once to do this review was enough. In fact, in the showing MOVIEGUIDE® attended, a dozen or so viewers left 15 within minutes.

Little has changed with the AMERICAN PIE franchise, save that, over time, it has gotten crasser, less funny, and continues to subject the viewers to the same old jokes and raunchiness over and over again. When faced with the release of AMERICAN REUNION, one can’t help but wonder: Is this really the fault of the studio executives, or of the culture who creates a demand for sequels by purchasing movie tickets? Let’s hope this is the last one.

Of course, there’s the semblance of a happy ending. Jim and Michele save their marriage and start having more sexual relations again (this time in the band room where they are, of course, interrupted by another alum). Also, the boys rekindle their friendship (which essentially means they encourage each other to cheat on their wives). Thus, there’s nothing really possibly redeeming about all this – except that the teenage girl who undresses and throws herself at Jim figures out she really shouldn’t go to be with the first stranger to come along. In the end, however, nothing has changed. A dubious set of relative morals has replaced an eroded set of equally arbitrary rules to life and we sense that all the problems that began the movie are just a few months away. Unless they make some meaningful changes this time, buying into the same broken system will no doubt lead to the same broken results. Therefore, we suspect that, before too long, Jim and Michele will be back in their respective quarters abusing themselves after putting the baby down.

Media-wise moviegoers will not want to soil their brains by seeing AMERICAN REUNION.
