More Detail:

MARCI X is a vile, immoral, anti-Christian, repulsive, poorly made movie with some sweetness added to make the abhorrent medicine go down. The movie opens with Marci, an attractive, blonde Jewish girl giving an award to her successful father, Ben Feld, at the American-Jewish Federation. She points out that when she was growing up, her father told her she was the most beautiful, most intelligent, most graceful, etc., girl in the world, so she should give something back. Then, clips show her giving something back by opening a soup kitchen, a drug rehab center, and other charitable deeds, all presented in a mocking tone.

Just as her father is coming up for his award, he gets pulled away from the room by his aides, who show him a TV news report of a conservative Christian senator who is lambasting the lyrics of several songs by Dr. S and calling for a boycott of Feld Enterprises. Dr. S’s songs focus on abusing women, the sexual prowess of men, oral sex, fornication, cruelty, and every other offensive item. Feld has a heart attack watching the news report.

Marci decides to take matters into her own hands and convince Dr. S to apologize for his wicked ways. She goes uptown to Harlem with her three friends and soon they succumb to the thrill of being part of the black African scene. Things intensify up to the point when a Senate hearing is being held to investigate, at which point Marci and Dr. S blackmail the Senator. The female Senator stands up and endorses Dr. S’s music, renounces her moral values, and confirms that you just have to be real – even if that includes perverse sex, foul language and other grotesqueries.

The only bright part of the movie is when Dr. S says, “Who decides what’s real?” Of course, in this case, it’s the black gangster community, but in truth, it’s God. And God tells us that being real is only found in Christ. God’s word gives stern warning about swearing, blasphemy, vulgar language, obscenity, mocking, and says that people who indulge in this type of behavior will not get into the kingdom of heaven. Since many people have forgotten the Bible’s teaching on this matter, here it is:

“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person – such a man is an idolater – has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.”

– Ephesians 5:3-5 (NIV)

“But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.”

– Colossians 3:8 (ESV)

The good news, of course, is that Jesus Christ is ready to forgive and fill us with His Holy Spirit so that we can be renewed and live in grace instead of debauchery.

Aside from its vileness, MARCI X looks surprisingly low budget. At times, the movie is flat and unfocused. It looks like it was shot or edited on video, although it may just have been slapped together. The acting is often pathetic, though sometimes it is engaging. The direction aims at kitsch, providing some saccharine sweetness in the midst of the vile message. The music is tedious and pedestrian.

All in all, this is a throwaway movie. It is probably a movie that Wayans wanted to do, and, then when the movie studio found out how bad it was, they put it at the end of summer, when no one goes to movies.

In a way, it is very racist as it portrays all blacks as gangsters. It tries to give an apology for the entertainment industry but looks pathetic in the process.

There is much to be exposed in the movie, but it is not worth the trouble. It will corrupt a lot of youth and be another one of those movies that make America look bad to the rest of the world.
