ME, MYSELF AND IRENE

What You Need To Know:

The latest Farrelly Brothers film, ME, MYSELF & IRENE, stars Jim Carrey as Charlie, a polite, forgiving Rhode Island Highway Patrolman who reacts to the affronts of others by developing a violent, suppressed, second personality. On the one hand, he is Charlie the do-gooder, and, on the other, he is Hank, the violent, sex-crazed lunatic. The plot revolves around these troubled personalities and their interactions with Irene, who is trying to escape an environmental offender bent on destroying her.

MOVIEGUIDE® has the role of pointing out both the good and the bad in a film. The story is generally about family, marriage, love, and romance. In all of these cases, it makes fuzzy, feel-good points. But, no amount of smoke and mirrors can hide what this production is really about: the candy coated destruction of Western civilization. The Farrelly brothers have previously noted that they get a kick out of taking nice stories and nice characters and hanging as much filth on them as possible. This production is no exception. ME, MYSELF & IRENE is chock full of foul language, vulgar behavior, sodomy gags, racist jokes, sex toys, and many other immoral elements

The latest Farrelly Brothers film, ME, MYSELF & IRENE, stars Jim Carrey as Charlie, a polite, forgiving Rhode Island Highway Patrolman who reacts to the affronts of others by developing a violent, suppressed, second personality. On the one hand, he is Charlie the do-gooder, and, on the other, he is Hank, the violent, sex-crazed, antisocial lunatic. The plot revolves around these troubled personalities and their interactions with Irene, who has problems of her own trying to escape an environmental offender bent on destroying her.

MOVIEGUIDE® has the role of pointing out both the good and the bad in a film. The good, in this case, should be pointed out first and gotten out of the way as quickly as possible. The story is generally about family, marriage, love, and romance (not necessarily in that order). In all of these cases, the movie makes fuzzy, feel-good points.

That said, no amount of smoke and mirrors can hide what this production is really about: the candy coated destruction of Western civilization. The Farrelly brothers have previously noted that they get a kick out of taking nice stories and nice characters and hanging as much filth on them as possible. This production is no exception. This tale is chock full of foul language, sodomy gags, racist jokes, sex toys, and many other immoral elements. It, once again, pushes the line of popular acceptability that much closer to the edge of the cliff. ME, MYSELF & IRENE lowers the proverbial bar that much lower, normalizing and legitimizing acts that only several months ago were unspeakable.

The sad reality is that all too soon we can expect to see the Farrellys at it again. Like a dog who has never been housebroken, the Farrellys will soon be back among us, spreading their refuse over all of America. What these reckless individuals fail to realize is that someday, the line will have been pushed off the edge, and the battered soul of America will lie dead at the foot of a cliff. By that point, it is doubtful the insipid Farrellys will think their work was all that clever. They certainly won’t be laughing any more then.

Interestingly enough, the success or failure of this movie will be a defining moment in this nation’s recent history. The failure of the last Farrelly production, OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE, gives a glimmer of hope to the idea that Americans may have had enough of the Farrelly formula. If they have not, may God help us all.
