THE LUNATIC

What You Need To Know:

A Jamaican black man's fantasy of a sexually aggressive Caucasian woman preoccupies THE LUNATIC when a schizophrenic named Aloysius, who converses with a talking tree, is sexually accosted by Inga Schmidt, a voluptuous German tourist. Bordering on pornography, THE LUNATIC is a comic attempt to reinforce the heinous myth that female church-goers are sexually repressed. Of course, this is a subtle attack on God's people and the standard that He established.

Content:

(LLL, VV, SS, NN, A/D, M, Ab, B) 23 obscenities & 5 profanities; man shot, tying man to bedpost, & sadomasochism; rampant fornication, naturalistic objects depicted as phalluses, taking pictures of man's genitalia, repeated sexual innuendo, & people and animals urinating; woman "breezing" in nude (from a distance), & rear nudity; breaking and entering; smoking marijuana & guzzling alcohol; beliefs about reincarnation & existentialism; a schizophrenic character with delusions; and, a few positive references to Christianity, but an overall message that church women are sexually repressed.

More Detail:

A Jamaican black man’s fantasy, THE LUNATIC begins with schizophrenic vagabond named Aloysius sleeping under the “Strong Heart Tree.” Inga, a voluptuous German tourist, discovers him, unzips his pants, photographs his genitals, throttles, and rapes him. Inga’s bizarre actions are matched only by her exaggerated physique. When a bush warns Aloysius about the “corruptions of the flesh,” the Tree snarls: “If there is one thing I hate, it’s a born-again bush.” The mindlessness continues as Inga finds a second lover, Service Johnson, the local butcher. To raise money, the trio plan to burglarize a wealthy white landowner’s house.

In spite of its preoccupation with sex, THE LUNATIC takes place in a Bible-believing, church-going community. However, Inga believes she is a reincarnated nun whose past life of repressed sexuality is all the more reason to indulge now. Perhaps the most significant development is that Service becomes a born-again Christian towards the end of the film. Even so, bordering on pornography, THE LUNATIC is a comic attempt to reinforce an evil myth that female church-goers are sexually repressed–a subtle attack on God’s people and the standard that He established.
