What You Need To Know:
AMERICAN ME depicts a ruthless crime lord whose rule extends from his prison cell to the streets of East Los Angeles. While exploring the horrible relationship between street gangs and prison crime, AMERICAN ME attempts to steer young people away from gangs. It depicts one evil grotesguery after another including perpetual murder, assault, homosexual rape, and drug abuse. Rather than calling us to action, however, the movie has a numbing effect while modelling anti-social behavior.

Beginning with the Pachuco riots in Los Angeles in 1943 and ending in the 1970s, AMERICAN ME follows Santana, a ruthless crime lord, serving a life sentence at Folsom Prison. He forms the EME, the most powerful gang in the penal system. From inside prison, EME works the streets engaging in extortion, gambling and prostitution. In the visitation rest room, a harlot flushes drugs down the toilet. In the sewer, inmates unscrew the pipes to find the cocaine, hiding it in their anuses. Santana’s mother tells Santana about the thief next to Jesus on the cross, who went to heaven by asking for forgiveness. Santana refuses to turn away from crime. A delivery boy becomes intoxicated, is homosexually raped and killed with a razor thrust up his rear. AMERICAN ME ends with Santana being stabbed to death by the EME and other tragedies.
