MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION is a arcade-savvy teenage boys dream with lots of martial arts fighting, special effects, females in skimpy costumes, and a driving dance beat. The evil Emperor Shao-Kahn passes through the porthole to earth and declares, “The earth was made in 6 days; so, I shall destroy it in six days.” Liu Kang must join his friends including Sonya Blade, Princess Kitana, Jax, and Rayden, the god of thunder and lightening, in fighting Shao-Kahn for the future of the world. Shao-Kahn kidnaps the Princess and unleashes his warriors on the mortals. Kang must go through a series of tests before he is able to face Kahn in a final battle for earth.
This sword-thin plot is carried forward by a series of numbing fight scenes and special effects. Any charm the first movie had is replaced by loud screaming, ferocious creatures, moody lighting, noisy music, and special effects overkill. While there is little bloodletting, the violence is rampant, and the creatures have a bad attitude. It is extremely tedious and boring. There is little moral value to this movie, as it demonstrates its occult worldview. MORTAL KOMBAT is a primer to condition youth to accept stronger fare as they get older

MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION is an arcade-savvy teenage boy’s dream with lots of martial arts fighting, special effects, females dressed in skimpy costumes, and a driving dance beat to accompany it all. The first MORTAL KOMBAT movie earned more than $23 million on its opening weekend, so this sequel stands a chance of performing very well among its fans. There was no press screening for this movie, but the first showing of it at 12 noon on a Friday was filled with teenage boys and some adults.
At the end of MORTAL KOMBAT, the humans saved the earth from the evil dwellers of Outworld by closing the porthole that joined the two worlds. Now, in MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION, the evil Emperor Shao-Kahn (Brian Thompson) passes through the porthole to earth and declares, “The earth was made in 6 days; so, I shall destroy it in six days.” He seals his hatred by breaking the neck of one of the renowned mortals from the first movie.
Liu Kang (Robin Shou, who also choreographed the fight scenes) must join his friends including Sonya Blade (Sandra Hess), Princess Kitana (Talisa Soto), Jax (Lynn Red Williams), and the god of thunder and lightening, Rayden (now played by James Remar, following Christopher Lambert in the first movie) in fighting Emperor Shao-Kahn for the future of the world. Shao-Kahn kidnaps the Princess and unleashes his warriors on the mortals. Kang must go through a series of tests before he is able to face Kahn in a final battle for the earth.

There is little moral value in this movie. Earth is saved by humans, and a god even becomes a man to help fight against the evil. The god of thunder and lightning gives the humans moral platitudes like, “Stick together. You are a family.” Most of the time, however, the humans are bickering when they aren’t fighting. This god also says, “It is not weak to value human life.” These sayings are nice, and perhaps moral, but they are said very flippantly and certainly not demonstrated with any drama.
MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION ends with an assurance that more sequels will follow. There are always villains who want to take over the earth, and there are always teenagers who will pay to see good looking, scantily-dressed people perform martial arts maneuvers. This movie is not quality viewing. It predominantly features occultism; and, it is certainly not for little kids. Though tame compared to some blood-spattering R-rated action movies, it seems like a primer for youth to accept stronger fare as they get older.
