TRACKER showrunner Elwood Reid gave a preview of what to expect for the next season as Colter Shaw deals with earth-shattering news about his father’s death.
“It’s just getting to see Colter in a different light. You’re going to see him in a really dark place and get to see his interactions with his brother and how that comes about. I’m really proud of our two-parter,” Reid told TV Insider. “Production wise, those are always hard to pull off. But also just from a storytelling standpoint, a lot of times I see two parters and I go, ‘***, this could be one episode. They’re just stretching it out.’ Because I’m really impatient. I think that when TRACKER’s working on all cylinders is when we have a case that tells you something about Colter, a little bit about his past, he has that emotional connection.”
“And then it also services this broader story arc that we’ve been trying to get to. So, we’ve been very, very careful in trying to have some of those cases, particularly the cases that open the season – if you remember last year, it was the second episode, the UFO episode. That was very intentional that that case would tangle back with the Shaw family stuff,” he continued. “So just trying to always keep that in mind. And this is something Justin and I talk a lot about, not viewing it as case of the week. I think the show’s been able to slide a little bit past that classification.”

Having found some answers to the questions that have plagued his family for decades, Justin Hartley, who plays Colter on the show, believes his character will be living his life with a new sense of relief, even though what he uncovered was dark.
“There’s a healing process. Probably right now, for the first time in 10 years, he’s unburdened by something,” Hartley told Parade. “When you come across people like that, what happens is they sort of evolve.”
“They had this thing that was weighing on them for that long; a decade’s a long time. And, all of a sudden, it’s no longer there and you have a couple of things that happen,” he continued. “Sometimes, there’s a psychological, bodily reaction, a relief. And then there’s also this thing you’ve had for 10 years that you no longer have, and now you’re looking for a purpose and redefining what you’re doing and why.”
As Colter starts to search for what keeps him going, hopefully he will lean on his role of bringing justice to a world full of evil. This theme has made the show worthwhile and keeps audiences coming back. A portion of Movieguide®’s review of Season 2 reads:
The first two episodes of season two of TRACKER balances moments of moral clarity with Colter’s efforts to protect the vulnerable and do what’s right against more ambiguous actions such as breaking the law to solve cases. The series weaves in biblical themes of helping others and standing up for the weak but also touches on darker elements like violence, light profanity, and hints of immorality, including sex outside of marriage. Overall, it’s a thrilling return, though due to some of the show’s content, discernment is recommended for older children.
TRACKER Season 3 premieres on Oct. 19 CBS and will be available to stream the next day on Paramount +.
