Why You Should Consider Getting a Master’s Degree

Why You Should Consider Getting a Master’s Degree

Planning Ahead – Begin with The End in Mind

Preparing for college, or even to return to college as an adult, to complete a bachelor’s degree can seem daunting. Higher education is more popular than ever. As more and more entry-level jobs require at least a bachelor’s degree, going to college has become an expectation for many high school students. With increased enrollment and completion of bachelor’s degrees, Millennials are now the most educated generation in history. As a result, more and more students, both first time freshman and returning adult students, are realizing that a master’s degree will provide a greater advantage in the job market.

The Challenges of Earning a Master’s Degree

The rising costs and time commitment of earning a master’s degree can be a concern for students. The cost of a master’s program can vary widely, with the average cost of tuition and fees reported as $16,435 per year, according to the most recent data provided by the National Center for Educational Statistics, not including the cost of books and other expenses. In addition, average yearly tuition for programs at private, non-profit schools is considerably higher at $23,698. In addition, students often pay tuition out-of-pocket or with loans, because fewer scholarships are available for graduate education.

In addition to cost constraints, the time commitment of a master’s program can pose a challenge to students. Many students need to work while completing their degree and some may have families. Committing to two or more years of school and finding time every week for classes and homework can seem unrealistic.

Why a Master’s Degree?

There are many reasons to earn a master’s degree. Greater hiring and earning potential, transferable skills, and greater credibility are a few. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the average salary for an individual holding a master’s degree is $69,732 –18% higher than the average salary for an individual holding a bachelor’s degree. In addition, the unemployment rate for master’s degree holders is 2.4%, while bachelor’s degrees are 2.8% according to the BLS.
