‘Come With Your Kleenex’: This New Bible Show Will Move You

THE FAITHFUL’s cast and crew recently shared their hopes that viewers come away from the series entertained and emotionally moved.

“THE FAITHFUL is stories from the Book of Genesis,” star Minnie Driver said in a promotional video from Fox. “It’s time for these stories to be told from the point of view of the women.”

THE FAITHFUL follows the stories of five women from the Bible — Sarah (Driver), Hagar (Natacha Karam), Rebekah (Alexa Davalos), Rachel (Blu Hunt) and Leah (Millie Brady).

“Come with your Kleenex box, because it’s about marriage. It’s about raising children. It’s about loss. It’s about choosing one child over another. It’s about sisters who are dear to each other, who lost their mother when they were young, [and are now] separated because of the love of the same man,” executive producer Julie Weitz told TV Insider.

She continued, “We hope that people learn something, but we also hope that people are affected emotionally by the decisions these women had to make and that we filled in the blank spaces the right way…because at the end of the day, it is a family saga.”

Weitz spoke further about the process behind making THE FAITHFUL in a recent panel discussion with reporters.

“We had this epiphany that there’s a point of view that has not been really looked at,” she explained. “Which were the women and how they were essential to the stories that most people know about: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob.”

Rene Echevarria, another executive producer on the series, praised other Biblical shows that have paved the way for something like THE FAITHFUL.

“The fact that it’s even possible to have the conversation…is only made possible because of the success of THE CHOSEN,” Echevarria said, adding that the popularity of this content showed networks and studios “there’s a hunger out there for these stories.”

Driver has also spoken about her role as Sarah in THE FAITHFUL, telling Deadline, “Throughout my career, I’ve been drawn to playing women who take big leaps of faith — whether romantically, spiritually or morally.”

“Stepping into the role of Sarah required embracing all three and more, as Sarah is an extraordinary human, having a deeply spiritual experience,” she added.

THE FAITHFUL premieres on Fox on March 22 at 8/7c.
