Quibi Tanks in iPhone App Ratings; Could Wholesome Content Have Changed That?

By Jessilyn Lancaster, Managing Editor

Quibi, the new streaming service that launched in early April from our close friend Jeffery Katzenberg, regrettably tanked in the latest iPhone app rankings, according to Business Insider:

The streaming app had a strong debut last week as the fourth most downloaded iPhone app, but quickly fell in the rankings. Yesterday, it dropped out of the top 50, and today it’s the 71st most popular app in the US, according to data from analytics firm App Annie.

Quibi is now less popular than NetflixHuluDisney Plus, and Amazon Prime Video among US iPhone users. It’s also ranked below an ASMR Slicing app, the Calm meditation app, and the Roku app that functions as a TV remote.

The unique streaming platform is available exclusively on mobile devices, and revolves on short-form content with all episodes shorter than 10 minutes.

However, as Movieguide® previously reported, much of the content is far from faith- or family-friendly. Many of the shows feature gratuitous language, sex, violence, and self-destructive content.

Movieguide® has spent more than four decades proving that programs with more faith- and family-friendly content actually outperform their excessive counterparts. Time and again, box office reports indicate that including faith and family content in movies guarantees financial success.

Quibi could have seen a stronger response had they followed this formula. Disney+, for example, contains many quality options for family entertainment, and continues to see monumental downloads, especially during the shelter at home situation. Though some of Disney+’s content is not suitable for children or teenagers, the vast majority contains moral worldviews with biblical principles. Quibi should have considered the success of faith- and family-friendly content and incorporated more acceptable options in its lineup.

By the way, MOVIEGUIDE’s founder Dr. Ted Baehr helped Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg by bringing in the theologians from 19 major denominations to help with THE PRINCE OF EGYPT, on which Katzenberg served as a producer. Considering our long standing friendship, we would love to have Quibi succeed.
