MECHANICS OF LOVE

"Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?"

What You Need To Know:

MECHANICS OF LOVE follows Matti, who returns home for her sister, Clare’s, wedding. Matti reignites an old fling with Jake, who just so happens to be the groom’s best man. But, just as Matti gets comfortable spending time with Jake, Matti’s boyfriend, Devin, comes to town to surprise her, and things get complicated. As the days pass, Devin clearly isn’t enjoying his time in Matti’s hometown, and Matti knows it. Matti does all she can do accommodate Devin, but things might not work out in their favor.

MECHANICS OF LOVE is sweet, with just enough conflict to avoid being super cheesy and predictable. The conflict helps move the movie along and doesn’t feel like everything is working out perfectly, even though things do work out perfectly in the end. The acting is above average, but some changes in the script and stronger performances from the supporting actors would have helped. MECHANICS OF LOVE has a strong moral worldview. It extols marriage, family and fatherhood. However, it has some light Romantic elements and a scene of drunkenness. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for young children.

More Detail:

MECHANICS OF LOVE follows Matti, who returns home for her sister Clare’s wedding and spends time with an old flame, Jake, when Matti’s current boyfriend suddenly appears to attend the wedding. MECHANICS OF LOVE is sweet, with just enough conflict to void being predictable and a strong moral worldview extolling marriage, family and fatherhood, but it has some light Romantic elements and a scene of drunkenness.

The movie opens with Matti and Jake at Matti’s father’s auto shop when they were kids. There’s a spark between the young children as Matti helps her dad fix Jake’s parent’s car.

Cut to present day. Matti tests engines at her job and fights for a promotion in her company. She dates Devin, a young CEO of a company. Matti gets excited to bring him home for her sister, Clare’s, wedding, but Devin informs Matti he’s too busy to go.

When Matti arrives back in her hometown, she goes straight for her father’s shop where she runs into a handsome mechanic, who just so happens to be Jake. Jake works for her dad now and is close to her family. Matti learns that Jake is Clare’s fiancé, TJ’s, best man.

When Clare informs Matti that her wedding budget is out of hand, Matti and Jake set off to ask the town for help with Clare’s wedding. Matti and Jake work all day to get Clare discounts with the necessary vendors for the wedding. Matti’s father also enlists Matti and Jake’s help to restore their mother’s old truck as a present to Clare for her wedding day.

On top of budget issues, it seems like the happy couple is having trouble right before they’re supposed to get married.

Just as Matti starts to get comfortable spending time with Jake, Devin surprises her for the wedding. On top of that, Matti gets the call she got the promotion at work. Devin doesn’t seem to care much, which hurts Matti’s feelings.

All the while, Jake is a gentleman and tries to make Devin feel like part of the family as he takes him along with all the bachelor party festivities. Matti and Jake continue to work on her mother’s old truck, and Jake sees that Matti’s true passion is fixing up old cars.

As the days pass, Devin clearly isn’t enjoying his time in Matti’s hometown, and Matti knows it. Matti does all she can do accommodate him, but things might not work out in their favor.

MECHANICS OF LOVE has a strong moral worldview extolling marriage, family and fatherhood. Those elements, and a scene of drunkenness at a bachelor party, warrant caution for younger children.
