More Detail:

UNCLE TOM is a documentary with interviews of African American conservatives from all walks of life who debunk leftist lies about America and about the conservative, capitalist principles that have made America great and that have benefited blacks who live in America. UNCLE TOM is an insightful, compelling documentary that showcases a perspective that radical leftist activists and media either ignore or deliberately try to bury in their frenzied pursuit for power, but the movie contains some strong foul language.

The movie opens with a young black businessman discussing how people on the left call him an “Uncle Tom” whenever he expresses an opinion that doesn’t fit with their radical political views. Other black conservatives mention the same thing. They also mention some of the other words people call them, such as “bootlicker” or “House Negro,” or worse. “An Uncle Tom is somebody who has sold out,” says author and radio commentator Larry Elder, “by embracing the white man, by becoming a Republican, by rejecting the idea that you’re a victim, by supporting such things as hard work and accountability and low taxes, by refusing to think of yourself as a black person first as opposed to an American who is black.”

A brief transition sequence follows as people celebrate the election of a black man, Barack Obama, as President of the United States in 2008. Following this are a number of personal stories from black conservatives. The first black businessman in the beginning describes how he voted for Obama in 2008 and became a Christian in 2009. A Christian friend of his challenged him to re-examine what the Bible says about taking care of the poor, and he discovered that the Scriptures weren’t talking about establishing big government programs to help the poor but were really challenging individual people to help the poor through private charity. His friend also challenged him to read the Democrat and the Republican Party platforms. After reading them, the man says he realized that he was really a Republican, not a Democrat. Other black conservatives repeat the man’s experience. They also discover the truth about the Democrat Party’s racist past, including its support for slavery, the KKK and segregation. Some of them also discuss how they achieved levels of success by working hard, getting an education and applying themselves.

From here, the documentary discusses all the charges of racism leveled against American society by the radical left, including the national “news” media. The documentary spends a lot of time debunking these charges and encouraging black Americans to reject them and to adopt conservative principles, not only in their public lives but also in their personal lives. Conservative pundit Candace Owens describes these charges as a “cancerous plague” in the mind of black people. The interviewees encourage people to overcome this leftist indoctrination. They point out repeatedly that anyone who adopts the American ideals of liberty and capitalism can succeed in America, regardless of their skin color.

The movie’s second half discusses the leftist campaign to smear conservative black leaders like Dr. Ben Carson, the creation of the “race grievance industry” by liberals and leftists after the murder of the Rev. Martin Luther King, the racist history of the Democrat Party, the negative impact of the welfare state on black communities and the black family, and the divisive nature of President Barack Obama’s racial policies. The movie closes with several of the black businesspeople interviewed affirming their belief in capitalist achievement.

UNCLE TOM is an insightful, compelling documentary. It exposes leftist lies about America, race and capitalism and shows how Democrat Party policies and the welfare state have hurt the black community and virtually destroyed the black family in the last 55 years. As Candace Owens points out, it isn’t white supremacy that’s hurting the black community in major American cities: “It is liberal supremacy that is harming our community.” The movie doesn’t just have a negative tone, however. It also has a strong moral, Pro-American, pro-capitalist, pro-life, pro-family worldview supporting American, conservative, free market ideals and principles. As such, it promotes individualism, liberty, hard work, responsibility, limited government, and self-governance. UNCLE TOM also includes some overt, positive Christian references.

That said, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children because of some foul language, including several “f” words during a couple confrontations with leftist protestors and a panel discussion.
