Life-Long Actor Stephen Dorff Says Family Keeps Him Grounded

By Jessilyn Lancaster, Managing Editor

Actor Stephen Dorff recently told Fox News that his family kept him grounded as his fame and popularity grew.

“I was very blessed with a very loving, supportive family around me. I have a great relationship with my dad. My dad’s very sensitive,” the actor told the conservative network.

“I think I’m getting better with age. I think in my 20s, I probably scared some people off. I wasn’t perfect, but luckily I’ve always been kind of open and I credit my family for that. I’ve never gone off the deep end into hard drugs. I’ve never been arrested…. a lot of times in movies, but never in real life,” Dorff said.

“I thank God that in my darkest times I’ve never [gotten into trouble] and I think that was probably that little voice… My mom always because I had, you know, not strict parents, but my mom was very intense on me and my brother’s upbringing, especially in a town like L.A., which can be very misleading for a kid,” Dorff continued.

Dorff, who broke into the industry as a child, says Hollywood changed significantly over his tenure.

“I miss the old days. I miss the old Hollywood producers. I miss the glamor and the mystery of what Hollywood used to be. I look at everything, from awards shows to premieres. It’s all a big joke now. It doesn’t have the chutzpah that it did,” Dorff told Variety. “There was a different feeling. Now, it’s like going on the Ellen show or being on a game show. It just feels cheap, and I don’t know why.

“But it is what it is. You’ve got to go with the future. You can’t fight against it. People want to watch Netflix or they want to watch Disney Plus and that’s great. I’m still a guy when the coronavirus is gone who will want to go to a movie theater,” he said.

Though many of Dorff’s movies are not appropriate for families, he did appear in WORLD TRADE CENTER, which was nominated for the Epiphany Prize® for Most Inspiring Movie of 2006 at the Movieguide® Awards Gala and Report to the Entertainment Industry.

WORLD TRADE CENTER was also selected as one of the Best Movies For Mature Audiences in 2006, and Dorff’s costars Michael Pena and Michael Shannon were nominated for the Grace Award for Inspiring Movie Acting in 2006.
