THE FLINTSTONES Return to Primetime in a New Adult Animated Comedy Series, BEDROCK

By Movieguide® Staff

After almost 60 years, the Flinstones family will return to the small screen.

Elizabeth Banks will head a sequel series to the 1960s animated sitcom called BEDROCK. The series, named after THE FLINTSTONES’ home city, is marketed as a comedy show for adults that will air on Fox. Lindsay Kerns will write the pilot script.

Banks, known for her roles in HUNGER GAMES and CHARLIE’S ANGELS, will voice Pebbles Flintstone and produce the series.

Deadline reported

Bedrock will follow the Flintstone family two decades after the original, with Fred on the brink of retirement and 20-something Pebbles embarking on her own career. As the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened new Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock will find this evolution harder than a swing from Bamm-Bamm’s club.

THE FLINTSTONES ran for six seasons from 1960 to 1966 on ABC. Notably, it was the first animated series to air on primetime television.

“Long before the Simpsons and Springfield, the Griffins and Quahog or even when the Belchers started serving burgers on Ocean Avenue, there were the Flintstones and Bedrock,” Michael Thorn, President of Fox Entertainment, said. “Their imprint on the animation universe is undeniable and the idea of adapting it for today’s audience is a challenge we here at Fox are very much looking forward to taking on with Warner Bros., Elizabeth and Lindsay. No pressure whatsoever, really.”

The original show featured a beloved cast of characters and the adventures of the Flintstone family in the stone age. Although THE FLINTSTONES had family-friendly values, primetime television looks a lot different today.

“The Flintstones are the first family of primetime animation,” Peter Girardi, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming at Warner Bros. Animation, added. “Elizabeth and Lindsay have a brilliant take on these characters, and Fox and Brownstone are the perfect partners to bring them back to primetime. This is going to rock, sorry.”

As with all media, parents should be wary of any series advertised as an adult comedy. Movieguide® hopes that BEDROCK will contain family-friendly content and uphold a similar moral standard as the original television show and not cater to their competitor’s push towards immorality.

A recent trend from the streaming giant Netflix has been animated shows that contain grossly immoral content but cater to younger audiences at first glance.

Previous Flintstone adaptations, such as the 1994 movie, have maintained the family-friendly content of the original series. Read Movieguide®’s full review of THE FLINTSTONES here.
