What You Need To Know:

THE NIGHT HOUSE is a horror movie about a young widow who’s menaced by what appears to be the ghost of her husband who unexpectedly killed himself. Beth, the young widow, is still grieving over her husband, Owen’s, perplexing suicide. She starts to experience what appear to be a ghost. Whatever is happening, though, it’s putting Beth’s own life in danger.

THE NIGHT HOUSE successfully scares viewers. It’s well directed and produced, with an excellent performance by Rebecca Hall as Beth and some intriguing plot twists. The plot moves a bit slowly, however. Ultimately, THE NIGHT HOUSE has a light moral worldview about good overcoming demonic evil. Beth gets help from a friend at a crucial moment. Also, an act of sacrificial love is uncovered. MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution, however, because of strong foul language, scary violence and some occult references. The occult content in THE NIGHT HOUSE eventually turns out to be a red herring.

More Detail:

THE NIGHT HOUSE is a horror movie about a young widow who’s menaced by what appears to be the ghost of her husband who unexpectedly killed himself. THE NIGHT HOUSE is produced and directed well, with an excellent lead performance by Rebecca Hall and a story where good overcomes demonic evil at the last minute, but the movie is sometimes a bit slow and contains strong foul language, strong scary violence and jeopardy, and occult content.

As the movie opens, a young widow, Beth, is still grieving over her husband, Owen’s, sudden suicide. Owen took a boat out on the lake next to their home, then shot himself with a gun Beth didn’t know he had. He left a cryptic suicide note, “You were right. There is nothing. Nothing is after you. You’re safe now.”

Beth begins to experience creepy supernatural events in the lake house. Among her husband’s things, she finds mysterious blueprints for a reversed floor plan of the house.

One night, Beth confides in her friend, Claire, that, when she was a teenager, she had a near death experience and saw there was nothing but darkness.

More hauntings occur, and Beth starts to believe they’re the ghost of her dead husband, Owen. She starts seeing an elusive, ghostly shadow of a man around the house. Owen’s mysterious blueprint leads Beth to a strange unfinished house on the opposite shore. She also discovers that Owen was cheating on her with other women and dabbling in occult voodoo for some reason. Things are not what they seem, however. Whatever is happening, though, it’s putting Beth’s own life in danger.
