Chris Pratt shared some insight into how he landed on the accent for his SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE character’s iconic catchphrase.

“I’m not going to say it right now because I haven’t done all my vocal warmups,” Pratt, who voices Mario, told ScreenRant. “I don’t want to do it, but it’s ‘Mamma Mia.’ It’s ‘Mamma Mia.’ And when you hear that original version of the character, it’s in Italian. It’s like, [high pitched] ‘Mamma Mia.’ And I’m like, ‘Why does it make sense for a guy who’s from Brooklyn who doesn’t have that accent to use that so much?’”

The actor continued, “So it was always tough. They’re like, ‘It’s written as “Mamma Mia.”‘ But I’m like, if I’m expressing some reverence or some sense of, ‘Oh wow, Mamma Mia.’ But that’s not something necessarily a person says unless they’re doing the Italian accent. So it’s always really hard to find how ‘Mamma Mia’ works.”

The PARKS & RECREATION star said he “always tried to vary” his line delivery, adding, “I think that’s maybe why they slowed it down to take some of the stink off it because I’m not sure I ever fully got it right, but it’s like, ‘Maaammaaa Miaaaa.’”

THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is already smashing box office records. It opened at $34 million, beating out PROJECT HAIL MARY to become 2026’s highest-opening movie so far this year.

In addition to Pratt, the movie’s cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Donald Glover as Yoshi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, Issa Rae as Honey Queen, Glen Powell as Fox McCloud, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. and Luis Guzmán as Wart.

CEO of Illumination Chris Meledandri recently shared how Glover and Powell took matters into their own hands to score their roles in the sequel.

“When we were working on the first movie, we began to get phone calls from actors,” he said, sharing that Powell called and “explained that we had to understand how deeply he loved the character of Fox McCloud. His dream was one day to be part of a Star Fox movie.”

Glover did the same thing, telling Meledandri, “I need to be involved, if there’s any way with a Nintendo movie.”

“I went on down to Pasadena with the kiddos and we saw the first one,” Glover told Polygon of his casting. “My kids were having such a good time. I was so blown away by it. Then the end came, and I was like, ‘Yoshi wasn’t in that, and I know people love Yoshi.’ So I immediately contacted [Pratt] and was like ‘Yo, what are you guys gonna do with Yoshi? I wanna be Yoshi.’”

THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE’s cast is clearly just as passionate about the franchise as its fans are!
