Melissa Joan Hart Gets Real About Parenting Teens: ‘It’s A Loss Of Their Childhood’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Like all parents, Melissa Joan Hart has a bittersweet relationship with watching her three boys grow into young men.

“They’re getting huge,” she told People. “My oldest is driving and it’s really upsetting.”

The actress shares sons Mason, 16, Braydon, 14 and Tucker, 9, with her husband of 19 years, musician Mark Wilkerson.

Her oldest, Mason, has both his driver’s and pilot’s license.

“He’s a pilot also, so he flies planes,” Hart explained. “I know he has a respect for engineering and machinery. So that helps. The younger two I’m more afraid of driving. But it’s just a loss of — It’s a loss of their childhood when they start driving, which is weird.”

Mason is also determining many of his priorities.

“He’s sort of navigating it now,” the actress said. “But he wants to focus on football, so he doesn’t want anything to distract him from that. That’s the way my husband grew up as well. I don’t know if it’s hereditary or he saw it from dad. They also have big cousins that are teenagers that are in [their] college years and they watch that. They kind of pay attention to them and learn from them.”

Hart has also instilled strong biblical values in her children, as well.

As Movieguide® previously reported:

GOD’S NOT DEAD 2 actress Melissa Joan Hart said her family prays constantly.

“We pray constantly. We pray over every meal. We pray every bedtime. We pray on every journey,” said Hart in an interview with Movieguide®.

Hart’s declaration echoes 1 Thessalonians 5: 17, where the apostle Paul says believers should pray without ceasing.

“We pray whenever we someone in the family needs that we pray for people that we know in the world that need it,” Hart continued. “Each night we take a different turn around the table praying and I love when our seven year old just as the funniest prayers, depending on which brother he’s mad at, he won’t mention them or dog instead of his brother. But no, we’re church going Sunday people and we’re Bible study people and, um, we really try to live a life based on what Jesus taught us.”
