Excessive Elements Marr PIECES OF HER

By Movieguide® Contributor

The trending thriller series PIECES OF HER, based on the New York Times best-selling novel, follows the story of a young woman piecing together her mother’s hidden past life.

The Netflix limited series PIECES OF HER was created by Charlotte Stoudt, and stars Toni Collette, Bella Heathcote, Jessica Barden, Omari Hardwick, David Wenham, Jacob Scipio and others.

30-year-old Andy is still living with her mother Laura in quiet Belle Isle, Georgia, where the two live pretty simple lives, until a shooter opens fire in a local diner.

When Laura is attacked by the shooter, she pulls off a move no one has ever seen anything like before, ultimately reigning her a local town hero.

Unfortunately, all the news and publicity surrounding the event catches the attention of many people from Laura’s dark past.

Laura sends Andy on the run by herself with intentions of keeping Andy away from the people who are coming after Laura. It seems it is already too late for that, as Andy is quickly followed, chased down, attacked, kidnapped, and more as she tries to uncover all the pieces.

Andy does everything she can to avoid the people chasing after her, no matter how rough it gets, and she keeps on going.

The more that surfaces from Laura’s past, the more Andy is confused and frustrated, realizing she knows absolutely nothing about her mother or the fake lives they have been living.

Andy continues on this wild goose chase, determined to find out the truth about everything. She also fears for her life and doesn’t know who to trust.

Will Andy make it out alive? Will she find all the truth she seeks? Will the mother-daughter relationship be rekindled, or have the lies ruined it?

PIECES OF HER has a predominately pagan worldview with a focus on the importance of power, revenge, and self-administered justice. Politics are huge and God is unheard of. A group, referred to as a cult, “Army of The Changing World” tries to take over with violence and people end up dead. Miscellaneous immoralities fill the series with everything from greed, revenge, lying, killing, stealing to sex and drugs and disobeying authority.

The language in this series is excessive with over 60 obscenities and over 15 profanities such as “Jesus” or “oh my God”!

The violence is excessive as well happening throughout the entire series including fist fights, strangling people, stabbing of hands and slitting of throats with knives, lots of guns and shootings, and a really bad car crash- all seen with excessive blood.

There is a decent amount of nudity with a lady seen showering (only see her back), a lady seen bathed and dressed both times you see her chest, and then also naked couple seen in bed. Full on sex scene is depicted, as well as some sexual talk/content being implied. There is smoking of cigarettes seen throughout as well as alcohol consumption all throughout.

Drugs are taken one night at a club, as well as a father seen pouring some type of drug into a drink with intentions of terminating daughters pregnancy. Miscellaneous immorality is excessive throughout with lying, cheating, stealing, killing, revenge, greed, love of power, disobeying authority and more.

The production value of PIECES OF HER was well done, grabbing the attention of viewers. All the different scenery, as well as the filming and use of colors/lighting, was all alluring and rather pleasing to the eye. The story is captivating, making the audience want to discover the truth as much as the characters want to. Unfortunately, there is an excessive amount of language, violence, and miscellaneous immorality. Aside from that aspect, it is an aesthetically pleasing and well produced series.

While there are redeeming qualities of love, family, forgiveness, and more – the negative content far outweighs it. Due to the excessive language, violence, and immorality, discretion is advised for older teenagers and adults.
