NBA Star Trae Young Announces New Athletic Center: ‘I Know It’s Going To Help A Lot Of Kids’

By Movieguide® Contributor

NBA star Trae Young is using his success to help others in his hometown.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Trident Gum donated $200,000 to the Trae Young Family Foundation. The Atlanta Hawks point guard launched the organization in 2019 to support people struggling with their mental health.

“Partnering with Trident…It’s big time,” Young shared, saying that Trident “really understands the mental health issues going on now.”

Young’s foundation will use the donation to help build the Young Family Athletic Center, a recreational center in the basketball star’s hometown of Norman, Oklahoma. The athletic center is set to open its doors in 2023.

“I know it’s going to really help a lot of kids around here,” Young said. The NBA star wants to help others in his hometown access physical and mental health resources.

“As far as continuing to have the right mindset…Understanding that there’s a lot that I really had to go through…that was a big reason I started it,” Young explained.

“I try to take care of my mental health as best I can,” he continued, crediting his friends and family for helping him stay focused on the important things in life.

“They keep my head straight,” Young shared. “At times throughout the season when it’s not going good, I see my family, I see my friends, I’m able to talk about stuff other than just basketball and that helps clear my head mentally too.”

The Young Family Athletic Center will host indoor sporting events, offer recreational programs for adults, and a number of community-building and sports programs.

Movieguide® previously reported on mental health:

As mental health becomes a growing concern in the digital age, a recent Gallup poll found that regular church attendance improves mental health.

According to the poll, 44% of people who attend church regularly described their mental health as “excellent.”

“The wellbeing of most groups mirrors the national trend, with their mental health scores worsening last year followed by little to no improvement this year,” Gallup reported. “However, Democrats’ mental health rating has been steady at a relatively low level since 2019 while frequent churchgoers’ has been steadily high.”

Conversely, of the people who do not regularly go to church, only 29% described their mental health as “excellent.”

The study also showed that the overall mental health in America has decreased over the past 21 years, with just 34% saying it is “excellent.”

Not surprisingly, the data correlates to what God promises his children in the Bible.

Not only does God command his people to glorify his name together, but Church also allows for us to live out our lives in a Christlike manner:

Love one another (John 13:35).

Welcome one another (Romans 15:7).

Care for one another (1 Corinthians 12:25).

Agree with one another (2 Corinthians 13:11).

Bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2).

Forgive one another (Ephesians 4:32).

Teach one another (Colossians 3:16).

Do good to one another (1 Thessalonians 5:15).

Confess to one another (James 5:16).

Show hospitality to one another (1 Peter 4:9).

Furthermore, regular church attendance helps strengthen a biblical worldview.
