Brandon Heath on the ‘Humbling’ Work Spreading The Gospel Through Music

By Movieguide® Contributor

Christian artist Brandon Heath is sharing personal details about his new song “Anywhere But Here,” which he recorded for the movie THE SOUND OF VIOLET.

The movie, based on a novel by the same name, follows the story of an autistic man who finds love with an unexpected partner.

“I have a heart for autism,” Heath told Faithwire of his decision to write a song for the movie. “[M]y step-brother is on the spectrum; he is autistic with Asperger’s.

“I’ve grown up with him,” the musician continued. “I have a heart for people who navigate life with autism and, obviously, there’s a spectrum, like they call it. Some people are more highly functional than others.”

THE SOUND OF VIOLET also addressed other challenging topics.

“What I also loved about THE SOUND OF VIOLET … [is] it also covers human trafficking,” Heath explained. “I think if we can talk about that in a creative angle, we should, which they did in the movie. I’m so proud of it.”

Heath’s song for the movie isn’t his only new project. He recently signed a new record deal and just released his first album in five years.

“I’m really excited to be making music again,” he said, describing how “humbling” is is to write music that spreads the Christian gospel.

“It’s a big responsibility,” Heath concluded. “I realize that people are paying attention. And the people who aren’t paying attention, they’re searching. So if our music can catch them on a day where a seed can be planted for the Gospel, I think music is a big way to do that, and I don’t ever lose sight of that.”

Movieguide®’s review of THE SOUND OF VIOLET reads:

THE SOUND OF VIOLET is a faith-based movie for older viewers. Shawn is a high-functioning, young autistic man who’s trying to find the perfect woman through the dating app for which he does the programming. Shawn gets involved with Violet, a young blonde woman who’s been forced into prostitution but tells Shawn she’s an actress who goes on auditions. Shawn’s brother and his Christian grandmother try to discourage the relationship. Eventually, Shawn learns the truth about Violet. He tries to find a way to safely free Violet from the pimp who threatens her.

The beginning of THE SOUND OF VIOLET is a little creepy and silly. However, when it’s revealed that her pimp forced Violet to become a prostitute, the movie becomes an intense, redemptive story. The question is whether Shawn and Violet’s love can survive. THE SOUND OF VIOLET has a strong Christian worldview. It has two strong church scenes and features two Christian hymns. There are, however, implied and overt references to prostitution. THE SOUND OF VIOLET also has two “h” words and some violence. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for teenagers and adults.
