ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA Exclusive Footage Revealed at Comic-Con

By Movieguide® Contributor

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA revealed its first official look at the San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, revealing familiar characters, new villains and intense action inside the quantum realm.

Variety reported on the Comic-Con exclusive footage, which included “first looks of Bill Murray’s character in the film, Jonathan Majors’ villain Kang the Conquerer and the briefest shot of MODOK, the bigheaded cybernetic villain from Marvel Comics, making his live-action MCU debut. MODOK did not speak in the trailer, giving fans little hint as to who could be playing the mutagenic monster.”

Movieguide® nominated ANT-MAN for their Best Movie for Mature Audiences award in 2015. The review reads, “ANT-MAN has a strong moral, redemptive worldview. Ultimately, the hero must redeem himself, especially in the eyes of his daughter. Scott is constantly reminded throughout the movie that he’s nothing but ‘a criminal.’ However, he doesn’t let this stop him from trying to be redeemed in the eyes of others and to “do good” with his talents and gifts. Thus, while, there’s a slight humanist element to Scott’s redemption, there’s still much to learn from his character’s journey.”

While the actors couldn’t share many details on the upcoming movie, they revealed a little about what audiences can expect from the third ANT-MAN franchise installment.

Marvel star Paul Rudd will return as Ant-Man alongside Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne or the Wasp. Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer will return as Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, Hope’s parents. Kathryn Newton, the newest addition to the ANT-MAN franchise, will take on the aged-up role of Scott’s daughter Cassie, who will don her own Ant-Man suit.

After the events of AVENGERS: ENDGAME, “Scott is pretty pleased with himself in his role with saving the universe,” Rudd told the cheering Comic-Con crowd. “Scott’s been busy at work–ish. With a little book. And I don’t know what else I’m supposed to say!”

Lilly shared, “The second film is all about how powerful [Hope] is. This one is about her vulnerabilities.”

“Cassie is becoming who she’s supposed to be,” Newton explained. “And I don’t want to say anything else.”

Peyton Reed directs ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA, making him the second director to lead an MCU trilogy.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA will hit theaters on February 17, 2023.

Movieguide® previously reviewed ANT-MAN:

ANT-MAN begins with Scott Lang let out of prison after stealing from a corrupt corporation and distributing the money to defrauded people. A father, he returns home to find his wife has remarried. Determined to prove himself to his daughter and wife, Scott turns back to crime to provide child support. Meanwhile, retired scientist Hank Pym and his daughter oversee new shrinking technology being researched at Pym’s large corporation. Pam and Scott’s paths cross when Scott breaks into Pym’s house to steal from a large safe in the basement. Scott finds a strange suit, which turns him into “Ant-Man.” Eventually, Scott must use the suit to stop the evil Hydra organization from using the shrinking technology to control the world.

ANT-MAN is funny, goofy and exciting, with a touching father-daughter relationship at its center. It has a strong moral, redemptive worldview where the protagonist wants to prove himself in his daughter’s eyes. Mitigating these positive qualities is some uneven character development. ANT-MAN also contains some foul language, strong action violence, light anti-capitalist elements, and brief references to ant evolution. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution.
