‘Unwatchable’: Fans Turn Off BLONDE After 20 Minutes

By Movieguide® Staff

Hey Netflix, how many times do we need to tell you that movies and television shows with more uplifting and inspirational content outperform those with excessive sex and violence?

Even die-hard fans of Marilyn Monroe say they are “disgusted” with the “unwatchable” travesty that is BLONDE.

Several fans are “horrified” and have labeled the streamer’s first NC-17 movie as “exploitive,” and “degrading.”

Other fans report they couldn’t make it more than 2o minutes into the movie without turning it off.

The Independent compiled some of the Twitter reactions:

“While the film is beautifully shot (most of the times) and Ana de Armas gives a luminous performance, it falls apart fast… and that last hour… unwatchable. An absoute head-scratcher of a movie,” one person wrote.

“Tried to watch @netflix Blonde,” commented another. “Couldn’t stomach more than about 20 minutes of the nearly three hours length. That 20 minutes was nothing but cruel and heartbreaking. Absolutely unwatchable.”

“I just started to watch Blonde and I’ve turned it off after 20 minutes, enough said,” wrote a third, while someone else described it as “a hate letter to the icon that was Marilyn”.

Ana de Armas, who portrays Monroe, also confessed that she was not comfortable with the tasks Director Andrew Dominick asked of her.

“I did things in this movie I would have never done for anyone else, ever. I did it for her, and I did it for Andrew,” she said.

If fans and the actress are speaking out about BLONDE’s excessive elements, that’s an indicator that audiences may finally be fed up with gratuitous content and instead seek to watch entertainment that brings them hope.

Even the streaming giant’s Top 10 reveals the truth: While new titles like DAHMER or BLONDE may make the list for a few days or weeks at a time, positive content like COCOMELON, DESPICABLE ME 2, SING 2, and family-friendly options are mainstays.

Unfortunately, Netflix limit the data they release and manipulate the statistics to make movies like BLONDE look more popular than they are.

Netflix said it now measured a view when a subscriber “chose to watch and did watch for at least 2 minutes — long enough to indicate the choice was intentional,” according Yahoo.

It’s a failing strategy.

As Movieguide® previously reported:

After Netflix shares plummeted to their lowest point since 2018, it is clear that some subscribers are fed up with the company’s insistence on catering to immoral projects.

While CEO Reed Hastings blamed increased competition among streamers, Disney+ and Amazon Prime leading the way, it is not a stretch to assume that Netflix’s past flippancy with mature content could also contribute to its first subscriber loss in over ten years.

The platform is hemorrhaging subscribers and seems to refuse to heed the message Movieguide® has shared with studios for years: Drop the immoral content, add more faith and family-friendly options.

Pushing for excessive scenes to be included in movies like BLONDE only harms actors and viewers. A more successful strategy would be to shy away from exploitation and instead tell stories that inspire.
