Salma Hayek and Director Joel Crawford Talk PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH

By Movieguide® Staff

Director Joel Crawford and actress Salma Hayek recently discussed the positive themes of their new family-friendly, animated adventure, PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH.

THE LAST WISH is a sequel to the 2011 movie, PUSS IN BOOTS, which follows a caped crusader cat named Puss, voiced by Antonio Banderas.

Puss was first introduced in SHREK 2 in 2004.

Hayek, who plays Kitty in THE LAST WISH, said her character helps reveal new character traits in Puss.

“She puts him in his place. Some of it is flirtatious, which is fun, too. But she understands boundaries. She is afraid of trusting people, very afraid of trusting people, or cats, or even dogs,” she told Movieguide®. “But at the same time, she is kind at heart enough to give second chances.”

Crawford, who is known for other family-friendly movies like THE CROODS: A NEW AGE, said that the story is about having the courage to be vulnerable .

“I think from the very beginning, this kind of nugget of an idea that like, this movie could be about celebrating life, that really excited me,” he told Movieguide®. “One of the themes that kind of rose to the top was about vulnerability. There’s the superheroes, Puss and Kitty, and they’re untouchable, [but] then having the courage to actually show their softer side, and it’s okay to be afraid. These are some wonder themes that rose to the top.”

In the movie, Puss is down to his final life and starts to assess what in life is most important to him.

Hayek and Crawford said that they related to that idea as they undertook the project.

“I think that’s something I have to remind myself every day. You get overwhelmed and I go, okay, priorities,” Hayek said.

“This movie is for everybody, not just kids,” Crawford added. “Especially as adults, as a parent, you get so focused on there’s so many things to do, and you’re always chasing what’s next… taking a moment to reflect [to] look at this moment right now; ‘What do I have, who do I have?’ It’s a message that is definitely something great for all of us at this time.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

In the animated movie PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH, Puss in Boots realizes he’s on his last life and needs to find the Last Wish star to ask for more lives. However, Puss isn’t the only one searching for the Last Wish. Goldilocks and the three bears and selfish Jack Horner are also looking. Puss teams up with a friendly, optimistic dog and Kitty Softpaws, whom he almost married. Kitty doesn’t trust Puss, though, because he’s been very selfish in the past. Will Puss overcome his selfish ways, win back Kitty and get the Last Wish?

Funny and exciting, PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH is well made, with interesting animation. The movie has a strong Christian, moral worldview where Puss in Boots must learn to be less selfish and egotistical, think of others above himself and realize he’s not invincible. Another character realizes the value of loving her family. THE LAST WISH also has a priest character and a reference to church. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children, because the Angel of Death and some other characters are scary.
