More Detail:

The subtitled film HATE is the first of a new genre of films from France called the “banlieue” films. These are films made in the disturbing housing projects within the industrial suburbs of Paris. HATE deals with the hatred that boys from these projects feel towards the police as they find themselves victims of police brutality. The story’s three protagonists, Vinz, Hubert and Said, hang out together and roam in and out of their neighborhood as they do everyday. Their lives are tragically effected by the discovery of a lost police gun. As the boys spend the day doing mischief, the hours roll towards their explosive confrontation with fate.

HATE is impacting, precise and highly visual in its portrayal of life in the projects. It cuts across geographical boundaries and reflects a global predicament that is growing in today’s world. The hopelessness and helplessness of life without goals and a future are powerfully brought out. The string of offensive language is extensive, and there is always underlying violence, but these harsh qualities only serve to show the moral and spiritual vacuum that mark the lives of those in the projects. Yet, HATE has a destination: its lost children who are looking for something to hang on to and find nothing.
