More Detail:

CELESTIAL CLOCKWORK is on one level a finely wrought work of art, combining a fine musical score with stunning visuals. On another level, it is a film every MOVIEGUIDE subscriber will undoubtedly want to avoid. Appealing to a homosexual and lesbian audience, this movie follows the exploits of Ana Mendoza , a gifted opera singer who walks out on her wedding. Ana leaves her native Venezuela for a new life in Paris, where she takes up with a motley group of misfits, including an arch villainess named Celeste. Ana’s quest is to advance her career as an opera singer, a goal that the very creative Celeste is determined to prevent. The Paris police learn that Ana’s visa has expired and they inform her that she will have to leave the country. With the Paris police in chase and Celeste inventing ways to keep her from obtaining the role, Ana finds herself in a number of unusual circumstances, including marriage to a homosexual man.

Weak on plot, this film’s greatest strength and weakness lies in its characterization. A French film with English subtitles, CELESTIAL CLOCKWORK tries to appeal to a broad audience by “softening’ the homosexual love scenes with various techniques. Nevertheless, with homosexual and occult themes of sorcery and astrology, this movie has no redeeming qualities.
