THE LITTLE MERMAID to Release on Disney+ in September

By Movieguide® Contributor

Disney+ subscribers can access the live-action version of THE LITTLE MERMAID on the streaming platform starting September 6.

The remake stayed true to the original animated movie, with only minor changes to better fit the live-action format.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

THE LITTLE MERMAID has a moral worldview showing an evil witch who is bad. The movie does have scary elements for younger children. Essentially, Ariel sells her soul to the devil character, the sea witch Ursula. She must learn her father had her best interest, and not to be tempted by evil. There are some scary elements to the movie as Ursula can be a bit scary for younger audiences and the scenes of the ship going under is also scary, so caution is advised.

The movie stars singer Halle Bailey as Ariel, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric and Melissa McCarthy as the evil witch Ursula. The beloved Sebastian, Scuttle and Flounder are voiced by Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay.

Premiering in May, the movie brought in $568 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. The remake was a modest success for Disney, finding success through nostalgia and a family-friendly storyline.

THE LITTLE MERMAID is just one of many live-action reimaginings of Disney classics that the company has released in recent years. It plans to release many more in the future.

Movieguide® previously reported:

LILO & STITCH is the latest Disney property to get the live-action remake treatment!

The popular movie is set to be directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, who recently directed MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON, and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Kekaniokalani Bright is in talks to write the script.

The live-action version of the popular characters has been in the works since 2018, and fans of the original movie can’t wait to see Lilo and Stitch hit the big screen.
