Houston Astros Player Wins Gold Glove Award: ‘Thank God for Everything’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Houston Astros player Mauricio Dubón received his first-ever career Gold Glove award and continues to give God all the glory for his success.

Dubón was given the award as a utility player. He played every position for the Astros except pitcher and catcher.

“The Astros acquired him in an early-season trade in 2022. He collected 41 hits in 83 games as Houston went on to win the World Series. Dubón had a much bigger role this season, hitting .278 with 10 home runs and 46 RBIs in a career-high 132 regular-season games. He went 8-for-26 in the postseason, helping the Astros reach the American League Championship Series for a seventh year in a row. They were eliminated by the eventual world-champion Texas Rangers in seven games,” Sports Spectrum reported.

Following his nomination, Dubón reflected on his defensive abilities.

“I feel very prideful in what I do, my defense,” he said when he found out he was nominated. “I prepare myself every day to play whatever position I get to play. If I’m not playing, I think that’s the hardest day because I’ve got to prepare for seven positions. So, I think that’s the biggest thing for me, just how I try not to make mistakes on defense, but sometimes it’s going to happen.”

Along with his baseball career, Dubón takes great pride in his faith. He cites James 4:7 in his X bio, which reads, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Dubón’s journey to America from Honduras:

When he was 15, a group of missionaries spotted Dubón and offered to bring him back to the United States so he could perfect his baseball skills.

“I just came here to pursue my baseball career. I know God had a plan for me over here in the States, so that’s why I came,” Dubón said.

He eventually landed in the MLB with the Boston Red Sox in the 2013 draft. From there, he would play for the Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants and the Houston Astros.

While on Sports Spectrum’s podcast in September, Dubón shared how blessed he feels to play the game he loves in the States and reflected on his faith journey.

“All the problems you have, just talk to Him,” he explained on the podcast. “It’s something that is easy to say, and it’s easy for you to go out there and talk to Him. And He’ll provide…I think that’s the biggest one I try to tell people: Just talk to Him. Talk to Him, trust God, thank God for everything.”

“I try to honor Him every time I get a chance, try to give Him His praise,” he added. “There’s a reason why I’m here. There’s a reason why He puts me in this spot. I wouldn’t be here without Him, so I think the most humble thing to do — and the way to honor Him — is try to mention Him every time I get a chance.”
