SPY KIDS star Alexa PenaVega grounds herself with faith and scripture after a recent series of losses.

“There have been a lot of losses of little ones around us lately,” PenaVega shared in an Instagram video this week. “My daughter had a friend in her co-op who passed away over the holidays, and then I got a phone call yesterday that a friend of a friend was experiencing a stillbirth and kind of how to walk through that and navigate that.”

Alexa, her husband Carlos and their family lost their daughter, Indy, in April 2024. She was born as a stillbirth.

PenaVega continued in her video, “And it is awful. And it’s not easy, and of course, it makes us think a lot. Brings us back to the kingdom, right?”

“But I want to share this verse that is so pivotal…for us in the time of grieving Indy.”

She shared James 1:2-4.

“‘Consider it pure joy when you face trials of many kinds ‘ — we all know the first part, but the second part is really, really important — ‘The testing of your faith produces perseverance. So let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing,'” she quoted.

The family experienced a lot of trials before they lost Indy, which helped build their faith for that painful time.

“So, when the big blow came,” she said. “When we experienced the loss of a child, we felt really equipped and honored and loved by God in that season.”

In the caption, she added, “So much more I would love to share and will share on all of this. But here’s a verse that God keeps bringing to the forefront of our lives.”

Holding Indy was the most painful moment PenaVega has ever experienced.

“I remember it feeling so hard to breathe. Such a deep aching pain…How was this real?” she recalled on the anniversary of Indy’s death.

“It didn’t feel real. Every emotion flooded in at once,” she said. “And yet, despite devastating loss, we felt so held…so covered…a supernatural peace. It was all out of our control.”

Indy’s life has completely transformed their family.

A month after Indy died, PenaVega said, “Our family has never been stronger. My faith has never been stronger. My marriage has never been stronger. Her life was so purposeful in just the little bit that we had with her.”

“It might be hard to understand unless you’ve experienced this kind of loss,” she continued, “But I really do hope that you guys see the crazy peace that we have, even through the pain.”

It’s an incredible gift that the family has felt so much peace despite their loss. Their faith is an inspiration and encouragement to anyone who’s going through their own trials.
