When Chris Tomlin and his wife Lauren got married, it was a landslide. It would take three years of God working on them to love God and each other better.

“We did not have one thing of conflict before we got married,” Lauren explained in a recent podcast interview. “Nothing.”

But one month into marriage, Lauren got pregnant.

“I was sick as can be,” she said. “It literally was a collision of the biggest — I called it the Holy War that lasted probably about three years of just really God dismantling both of us and taking us to the studs.”

At the time, they had rented a bus, and she had planned on going on tour with him, but that didn’t happen.

“God really hemmed me in because I married Chris in some ways thinking he would fulfill me,” Lauren admitted. “Let’s be real.”

God showed her that He is above her marriage and that He’s the one she should rely on, even more than her husband.

In another interview, Chris admitted that their lives after marriage were a total collision.

“Yeah, we dove in the deep end year one,” Chris said. “Just everything in life changed in that year.”

The best thing Chris discovered about Lauren is her huge heart for others.

“That’s probably the biggest gift that she has been…She’s so just the individual person, seeing that need and seeing people in a great way,” he said.

What Lauren loves about Chris is how present he is for their family, which includes three young daughters.

“That’s something I cherish. I’ve never anticipated he would be that engaged and present at home. Not out of obligation, but a want to,” she said.

The couple will celebrate their 16th anniversary this year.

“15 years today, God gave me the greatest blessing of my life!  Happy Anniversary babe.  I love you so much,” Chris shared on Instagram on Nov. 9 last year.

“There is no way I would be who I am today without you.  So much refining, reshaping, transformation and grace in these years together…and so much love , beauty and adventure as well…Here’s to the next 15!  ❤️🫶🏼”

Their hope for their family is that their daughters will know who they are as children of God.

“One of the verses that God brought us to is in Proverbs 22:1,” Chris said. “It says that a good name is to be treasured above all riches. I was telling the girls at the end of the day, all you have is your name. You can have all the things in the world, but when people say Ashlyn and they say Madison or they say Elle, when they say your name, what do they think about?”

“Them walking in that and knowing who they are, as a dad, would definitely be the ultimate bucket list; they’re confident in who they are,” Chris said.

Nearly 16 years after their wedding, the trials that once tested the Tomlins’ marriage became the foundation for a deeper faith and lasting family.
