How Christians Should Think About New Year’s Resolutions

By Movieguide® Contributor

Movieguide®’s CEO Robby Baehr and creative director Jeremy Carroll recently talked about the role New Year’s resolutions have in a Christian’s life.

While setting goals is important, the two shared on “The Familyguide” podcast that the biggest concern with focusing on resolutions is becoming so work-oriented that there is little time for other activities.

“The goals mindset is another thing of like, ‘Hey. We are productive every moment,” Baehr said. “It’s like my friend who has the Excel with key performance indicators in it. It’s like every moment is productive. I wonder too, part of it is like, yes we want to amplify our spiritual discipline, we want to amplify our physical disciple, our mental discipline, we want to be better fathers, you know. Like, I want to be a better father to my kids. I want to be a better husband to my wife. But there is also a moment for leisure, and I think that is interesting. Just thinking about it is like that’s something that’s hard.”

While culture promotes business and productivity, God wants us to enjoy moments of leisure and rest.

“I wonder if that is a particular societal thing,” Baehr added. “Then the call of God that’s like, ‘Hey. It’s okay to have leisure.’ That’s acceptable.”

God sets the example for leisure in the Bible. After creating the world, he rested on the seventh day. Jesus encouraged leisure when Mary sat at his feet while Martha stayed busy.

However, “I think there’s a deep value to goals,” Baehr continued. “You know, I think that, obviously, you [can] go extreme on any side, but I think there is a value to, ‘Hey, let’s plan it for tomorrow. Let’s let’s have a hope that there’s a future.”

“What you do here is like not a waste,” he added, quoting Tim Kellar. “It’s something that you can use for all eternity…and so like it’s like plan, our strategy, our doing those sort of things are good.”
