Jennifer Garner’s Dog Birdie’s Birthday Wishes Include Reading to Kids

Jennifer Garner’s dog Birdie is sharing some of her wishes ahead of her 9th birthday.

“Birdie’s a therapy dog and she just got a promotion to work at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles,” the actress told We Rate Dogs. “So she’s excited. She wants to have her first time at Children’s Hospital LA before she turns 9.”

For her birthday, “[She] wants to read some new books for kids,” Garner shared, adding that Birdie’s birthday wishes also include eating “an entire string of cheese,” swimming in the Olympics, skydiving and singing with the Metropolitan Opera.

Garner also shared her thoughts on why we love dogs so much.

“Because they love us. Because they’re kind. They show us kindness and loyalty and a lack of judgment,” she said. “I think that you love something in the act of caring for them, so because dogs need us to care for them, we form that bond in that way.”

Birdie is often featured on Garner’s Instagram, including her “Books with Birdie” series, where she reads children’s books to her dog.

“Birdie is a huge early literature, just kind of a literacy advocate,” Garner said via PEOPLE. “So it only makes sense that she would have this series ‘Books with Birdie.’”

Turning to Birdie, the actress said, “She just really likes to promote children’s literacy, right? It’s super important to you, just part of your mission of who you are.”

Garner often talks about the importance of children’s literacy. Movieguide® previously reported:

Jennifer Garner is returning to Kentucky to lend a hand a year after floods devastated the area.

During her visit, she surprised local students and teachers with a gift of 500 books, teacher resources and a donation of 5,000 books once the future libraries are built.

“Children’s libraries are some of the most important places in our country, but you know what, a push cart is better than nothing,” Garner explained. “A push cart with an amazing librarian like we met today, who’s prioritizing reading, who’s showing the kids that it matters enough that she will push around a cart to make sure they have some books.”

She continued, “There’s a lot of trauma just in growing up below the poverty line, and if you can name it, then you can heal, you can be resilient and move on. And it’s amazing — it’s amazing to watch in action. They’re on their way back.”
