SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE will swing into theaters in 2027, making it the third and final installment of the animated trilogy.
The animated Spider-Man films take place in a different “universe” from the live-action Marvel films. In these movies, Spider-Man is a boy named Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore. In BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE, hewill take on the villain named “Prowler.”
Sony Pictures posted a photo of the Prowler to their Instagram page on April 1, announcing the movie. But putting the post up on April Fool’s Day left fans cautious.
“Spiderverse team, my heart is too fragile to be played with this way on April fools day, please be real,” one user said. Another person added, “If this is an April fools, I’m gonna lose it.”
Thankfully for fans, it wasn’t a prank, and the movie will hit theaters June 4, 2027.
“We know how important this franchise is to so many people around us. We just could not run it back,” producer Phil Lord and directors Justin K. Thompson and Bob Persichetti said at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. “So, we decided we needed to take the time to make sure we got it just right.”
As one would expect, the final film will be something special.
“It’s going to be a massive finale to the trilogy,” Lord teased.
He added that this film will have special formatting so it can be shown on even larger screens.
“We are prepping this movie especially for your large format screens. It looks insane,” he said.
The previous sequel, SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, released in 2023. Movieguide®’s review reads, “In SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, Miles Morales encounters a new supervillain calling himself ‘The Spot.’ The Spot is able to throw a large black spot onto a bank vault and steal money or escape through one of the spots he casts.”
Spot ends up gaining power and must be stopped.
“When The Spot amasses enough power to threaten the multiverse, Miles teams up with a society of Spider-Men or Spider-People to stop The Spot. Eventually, however, Miles faces a moral dilemma that affects the people he loves the most,” the review continues.
Movieguide® notes that the film “is a creative, exciting, funny animated superhero movie,” but there is some violence and “brief foul language.”
The previous film did well in the box office when it released. Movieguide® reported, “The film earned a staggering $120.5 million within the country. SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE ranked second for biggest opening weekend, just behind number one, THE SUPER MARIOS BROS. MOVIE.”
While BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE won’t hit theaters until 2027, Spider-Man fans can catch Tom Holland’s fourth installment as the web-slinging hero next summer in Sony’s SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY.
