Meta’s Threads launched a new feature intended to protect users from some top-secret information — movie and TV spoilers.

“Spoiler alert: We’re testing a way for you to hide spoilers in your Threads posts,” Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted on the platform.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri explained, “When creating a post, highlight text or images and tap ‘mark spoiler” to blur it.”

The spoiler text and images will then be grayed out in posts, only becoming viewable when a user manually clicks on them.

“Threads is the only app of its kind to have this type of content label, so I’m excited to see people use it to share perspectives about what they’re into,” Mosseri shared

In addition to being a helpful tool for people who want to use social media without having the latest episode of their favorite show spoiled for them, it also helps generate conversation on Threads, encouraging users to post about movies or shows without fear of ruining the plot for others.

“Popular shows like THE LAST OF US and THE WHITE LOTUS regularly trended on Threads during their seasons, a clear sign of the app’s growing community of entertainment and pop culture enthusiasts,” a press release from Meta reads

The spoiler-free tool is still being tested, with Meta spokesperson Alec Booker telling The Verge the current rollout is a “global test.” However, Booker did not elaborate on who will gain access to the feature.

He did share that the spoiler-blocking will look different based on whether a user is on mobile or desktop. On mobile, the spoilers will appear behind floating dots, while desktop users will have spoilers hidden by a gray block.

“This feature is currently optimized for mobile, but we’re working to improve the experience for desktop,” Booker explained.

Threads is working to expand its number of users. Since its 2023 launch, the app now has “320 million monthly users,” per Social Media Today, as well as “strong download momentum.”

“The signs do suggest that Threads is on track to exceed 400 million users this year,” the outlet continued, but added, “Though that would still leave it a fair way off of X, which, as of last month, is now claiming 600 million active users.”

While X is still the text-based social media platform to beat, this new tool is a significant step for Threads as it works to grow its user base.
