Bethany Hamilton reminds her followers to “look to God” during life’s challenges.
“Life’s a continual challenge. How we face the challenges matter!” she wrote in an Instagram post. “Will we despair? Lose hope? Get angry and hold on to that anger? Or will we try again. Forgive again. Look to God again…”
Hamilton then shared a Bible verse — “‘In this world you will have trouble. Take heart I have overcome the world!’ John 16:33.”
Hamilton, who famously survived a shark attack at 13 that resulted in the loss of her arm, often speaks about the importance of relying on God amid life’s challenges.
“This was not the plan I had for my life,” she said of the shark attack during a recent speaking engagement at Liberty University. “There’s likely going to be things in your life that aren’t a part of your plan. So how can we turn this chaos and overwhelm into peace? How can we face adversity with resilience? How can we adapt when life gets crazy and super hard?”

Hamilton continued, “One thing that can bring peace amongst all the chaos is knowing God’s grace, His forgiveness, His peace, His love. That is what will change you to face the adversity with a whole new level of appreciation.”
“When each of us keeps going through those hardships, we have a ripple effect on one another,” she concluded. “When the going gets tough, let’s run this race with endurance. Let’s look at God to be the author and finisher of our faith, so when we feel like giving up, we can keep going because we know that we have a God who has more for our life.”
Hamilton’s story was told on the big screen in 2011’s Teddy Bear Award® winner SOUL SURFER, as well as the 2018 documentary BETHANY HAMILTON: UNSTOPPABLE.
Speaking to CBN about how the documentary’s title came to be, Hamilton explained, “It was funny, right when we were trying to come up with the name of the documentary it felt hard. Then our director suggested the title, but I didn’t know if I could live up to that.”
“In the Christian faith, the way I view it is that through Christ I am unstoppable,” she continued. “It is Christ who has saved me and made me whole and new again. And even though life definitely has its ups and downs, I always have God’s Word and promises to lean toward. That makes me unstoppable and can make all of us unstoppable. It’s a confident and lighthearted move forward in life and knowing we’ve got this.”
Hamilton’s story is an inspiring reminder to look to God during hard times and trust in His plan for our lives.
