Michael Iskander explained how his character, David, begins to evolve from a young shepherd boy into a warrior in HOUSE OF DAVID Season 2.

“In this season, [David] is becoming a warrior. And he goes from this innocent little shepherd boy to a man of blood,” Iskander told Movieguide®. “And famously, Saul killed his thousands, David has his tens of thousands. So what does it look like for a shepherd boy to kill tens of thousands of people? And we dive into that.”

“We show [David’s] journey, and I think from the first episode to the last episode, you’re seeing a different person in front of you,” the actor continued. “And you’re seeing someone who’s grown physically, emotionally, mentally, in his relationship with God; he is a man on all levels and has fully embraced the fact that when you follow God, not everyone’s going to be happy.”

Iskander has prepared for years now to portray this side of David and show the evolution from a lovable shepherd boy that anyone could root for into a hardened warrior who has real enemies. While most people know the story of David and Goliath – the climax of the first season – not as many know about the rest of David’s life and how he continued to be a man after God’s own heart, eventually becoming the king of Israel.

“I just wanted to focus on doing the story [of David] justice and doing David justice, and really being able to kind of honor this man who was known as [a man] after God’s own heart. And it’s a challenge,” Iskander said in May of 2025. “It takes immense prayer and immense conversations on set.”

The second season of the show also begins to set up parts of David’s story where he failed and chose to humble himself before the Lord rather than carry on in pride.

“I think humans are very complex beings and we can’t tell our story without telling some of our downfalls. I have a line that I don’t cross, but I don’t think we should be afraid to dive into the complete nature of humanity,” Iskander previously explained.

“The story of David is pretty wild, and I think there’s a reason why it’s resonated for so many years,” he added. “People have come up to me from all walks of life — not just Christians — and they talk about how much they love it.”

As of March 27, HOUSE OF DAVID Season 2 is now available for all Prime Video subscribers. While Season 3 has yet to be announced, it is expected to release by the end of this year.
