Angel Studios just signed its name on THE SENIOR, a movie that tells the true story of a man who finally joined college ball — 35 years after he was rejected.
The movie is made by Wayfarer Studios and directed by STRAW DOGS’ Rod Lurie, Deadline reported July 9.
Michael Chiklis stars as Mike Flynt, who returns to college to finish his senior year — three and a half decades after he left.
“To his family, former teammates, and himself that it’s never too late to tackle your dreams,” the logline reads.
Mary Stuart Masterson, Brandon Flynn, James Badge Dale and Rob Corddry also star.
“THE SENIOR is the kind of story that reminds us it’s never too late to defy expectations, overcome regrets, and live out your purpose,” said Brandon Purdie, Angel’s global head of theatrical distribution and brand development.
“The Angel Guild resonated with Mike’s inspiring story, Rod’s vision to bring this true story to life, and the engaging performances from this exceptional cast,” the distribution head continued. “We’re excited to partner with Wayfarer Studios to champion this film that aligns so closely with our mission to amplify light through powerful storytelling.”
THE SENIOR is produced by Mark Ciardi and Campbell McInnes of Select Films and Justin Baldoni and Andrew Calof of Wayfarer Studios. Steve Sarowitz, Tracy Ryerson, Kelly Williams, Jonathan Duffy, John Kang, Mike Ilitch, Jr., Ricardo A. Salas and Robert Eisele are executive producers on the project.
“At its core, it’s a story about the unshakable power of faith, the bonds of family, and the relentless spirit that lives in all of us; no matter our age or circumstance,” Calof said.
“Rooted in the heart of America and centered around the world of football, it taps into something deeply human: the idea that perseverance, determination, and belief can carry us farther than we ever imagined,” he continued. “We’re incredibly proud to bring this film to life in partnership with Angel, whose commitment to creating impact for good mirrors our own mission: to tell stories that move people and make a difference.”
The movie’s lead actor shared a photo of the book, The Senior, in which Flynt recants his story, on Instagram on July 9.
“This TRUE, feel good, redemption story is hitting theaters Sept. 19th! Let’s go!!! #football #family #Faith” Chiklis said.
“I am beyond excited for you all to enjoy this feel good film! A true story that will make you laugh, cry and cheer!” he said in another post.
The feel-good movie is set for release in the U.S. on Sept. 19, 2025.
