HGTV superstars Erin and Ben Napier have one rule for their kids’ birthday parties.
“Our rule is, until they’re old enough to plan it themselves, it’s supper at grandparents,” Ben told TODAY.com.
The couple shares two daughters, Helen, 7, and Mae, 4.
“If your 4-year-old’s birthday party looks like a wedding, what do they have to look forward to?” Erin added. “Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I think there’s a lot of moms out there who feel the same way I do.”

Ben recalled his birthday parties when he was a child, remembering going to a park with his family where they would share some pizza and his mother’s famous homemade cake.
“And it was awesome!” he said. “It was amazing.”
Ben considers birthday cakes a big deal, as that was something his mother would make for him as a boy, and now, Erin continues that family tradition.
Along with being busy parents, the Napiers have lots of renovation projects in the works, including a new season of HOME TOWN. They also planned to launch a spinoff show, HOME TOWN: INN THIS TOGETHER, with their friends which would see them renovate an old building into a hotel in Laurel, Mississippi.
Unfortunately, a fire that broke out in the top floor of the future Heirloom hotel set their plans back. Thankfully, no one was injured.
“I don’t know what will happen next or if you’ll ever get to see this @hgtv show now. I don’t know much of anything,” Erin posted late last month after the tragedy. “Pray for my friends and family, please. It is hard to explain how this reverberates through our town and its progress in many ways. But I know God has a plan for this setback. He always knows the way, even when we don’t.”
In a post last week, the Heirloom team posted, “Round two. It’s never easy to start over, maybe even harder the second time, but we believe this town and these people are worth every ounce of our effort.”
They emphasized in another post that “Courage is not the absence of fear, but the resolve to act in spite of it. That’s an heirloom worth celebrating.”
Whether working on new projects or raising their daughters, the Napiers are sure to keep family, community and tradition at the forefront of all they do.
