What’s Happening With the Christian Super Bowl Halftime Show Alternative?

At the beginning of October, Cory Asbury and Forrest Frank floated the idea of a Christian alternative to the Super Bowl halftime show and now they have an update as the project gets rolling.

“I have been getting absolutely blown up about this Jesus Bowl 2026 halftime show idea. I’m getting tens of thousands of messages and comments. I love it, but I’m here to provide some clarity on this thing,” Asbury shared in an Instagram video. “About a month ago, Forrest [Frank] and I soft launched this idea of an alternative [Super Bowl] halftime show. People loved it. It took off. It went viral quickly. It seemed like there was a desire for something like this, and in the midst of that, Turning Point USA announced their own alternative halftime show. No venue, no artists, but they said, ‘Hey, we’re doing this.’”

“So in the spirit of unity, Forrest and I jumped on a call with their team to talk it through. It was a productive, amicable conversation, but at the end of the day, the two visions are just incompatible,” Asbury continued. “We want this to be a Jesus moment, we want this to be a time where culture is doing one thing and we’re doing another: We’re glorifying the name of Jesus, we’re showing He preeminence, we’re worshipping, we’re praying. I almost see it as an evangelistic, Billy Graham crusade kind of thing, where there’s a call to the altar. There’s a call to give lives to Jesus and there’s mass salvation taking place across this nation. How beautiful would that be?”

Asbury went on to explain that he and Forrest were now looking into a venue and sponsors as they attempt to make this idea a reality and serve the nation a show they believe it craves.

This year’s Super Bowl halftime show is headlined by Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny which many people plan to skip watching – especially if they are tuning in with kids – because of the artist’s frequent foul language and the emphasis of obscene topics in his songs.

To better serve families, Asbury and Frank came up with the idea to do a family-friendly, faith-based show instead.

“What if we did an alternative, family-friendly halftime show for the Super Bowl? Every year, everyone is all up in arms about the performer for the halftime show, and I get it because nine times out of 10, it’s raunchy as heck. You’re seeing stuff you don’t want to see. You’re hearing stuff you don’t want to hear, especially for your kids,” Asbury asked in the Oct. 5 video reposted by Frank.

Meanwhile, many football fans are trying to get the NFL to switch the performance to someone they would actually enjoy, such as Lee Greenwood or George Straight.

“The Super Bowl halftime show should unite our country, honor American culture, and remain family-friendly, not be turned into a political stunt,” a petition to change the headliner to Straight reads.

While the NFL has made it clear that it will not shift from Bad Bunny to another artist, it is encouraging to see Asbury and Frank continue with their family-friendly idea so families still have a safe place to go during halftime, rather than having no alternative to the obscene halftime show we are likely to receive.
