OUTER BANKS star Charles Esten loves his new role in Angel Studios’ HOMESTEAD: THE SERIES.

The series picks up where the movie HOMESTEAD left off.

“After a nuclear bomb detonates off the coast of Los Angeles, a once-pampered nation devolves into brutal chaos…[the] series follows the survivors within the Homestead as they clash against one another and the violent world outside. Are they an ark or a fortress? Is it kill-or-be-killed, or is God doing something greater?” a synopsis of the series reads.

Esten plays Cain.

“As I’ve been playing it this season, one of the things that I noticed and I love is the back and forth with Jenna, Dawn Olivieri’s character, which she plays so perfectly,” Esten told Movieguide®. “She’s always measuring the things she should do against her faith and against the person she wants to be and she thinks God wants her to be. Cain doesn’t do any of that. Cain is like, enough thinking, enough paralysis of analysis. This needs to be done now. There is no time for that. That could almost be his slogan: ‘We don’t have time for your goodness.'”

“But along the way, he starts to realize what she knows, which is if we become just like the darkness out there, then what is the point of defending any of this?” the actor continued. “That whispers into him near the end of the season. Whether it’s enough to bring him around, we’ll see, because he still has things he knows that need to be done, and while Jen is thinking, he has to go do them.”

The HOMESTEAD movie debuted last year, starring Neal McDonough.

“I think when you see a lot of post-apocalyptic films, they’re always kind of zombie films,” McDonough told Movieguide® at the movie’s 2024 premiere. “This is different. This is really a ‘what if?’ for human beings that stay as human beings. On the Christian side of it, it’s ‘what are you prepared to do if something horrible happens to help humanity more than just helping yourself?’”

Part of Movieguide®’s review for the first two episodes of HOMESTEAD: THE SERIES reads:

The first two episodes of HOMESTEAD are a brilliant “faith-based” spin on the “post-apocalypse” genre. The episodes feature top notch performances, writing, editing, and cinematography. They also deliver a strong Christian, moral worldview supporting family, prayer and perseverance in dark times. Jeff and his wife lead the community with perseverance and compassion, despite the circumstances. Moreover, there’s earnest discussion about PTSD, people’s declining mental health, and being able to forgive one’s enemies. However, the series features intense peril, violent shootouts and chaos. As a result, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for teenagers and sensitive adults.

“Even for families, it’s a chance to think: Can you hold onto your faith under real pressure?” Esten said of the show’s message.

HOMESTEAD: THE SERIES streams on Angel Studios.
