New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson is praying that God opens “the eyes of our hearts” to what separates us from Him.

“Jesus didn’t come from Heaven to celebrate and affirm sin. Do we not realize why Jesus had to go to the Cross in the first place?” the athlete asked in an Instagram post last week.

He then referenced 2 Corinthians 5:21, which says, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

“How could God celebrate or affirm the very thing that separates us from him and that leads people to death?” the running back asked.

Henderson also referenced Isaiah 59:2 and Romans 6:23.

Isaiah 59:2 reads, “It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, he has turned away and will not listen anymore.”

Romans 6:23 explains, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Henderson went on to describe how much God truly desires a relationship with all of us.

“God wants a relationship with us, He loves every single one of us and that love is shown on the Cross,” he said. “But there’s something that has separated us from Him, there’s something that causes our hearts to be hardened and causes us to turn from Him. It’s our sin.”

“I’m not here to preach perfection. See, when Jesus came, He didn’t go sit with those who thought they were perfect,” Henderson added. “Jesus came and sat with the sinners to preach repentance and give them hope. He wasn’t there to celebrate and affirm their sin. He was there full of grace and truth, testifying.”

After all, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor — sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent,” Jesus said in Luke 5:31-31.

The reality is that “God loves the sinner, but He hates the sin.”

“His love for you and me is not to affirm our sin and keep us bound to sin, but to turn us away from it and draw us towards him so we can be set free and given a new name. His son or daughter. So we can be forgiven, transformed into his image and receive eternal life,” Henderson concluded.

He ended this post with one final verse: Romans 2:4, which reads, “Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?”

No matter how big or small your sins may be, nobody is too far gone for God. God is in the business of saving lives, and He ready for us to repent from our sins, turn to Him and be made new.
