BOSTON BLUE’s Sonequa Martin-Green wishes Tom Selleck would return as Frank Reagan for the BLUE BLOODS spin-off.

Tom Selleck “is always getting asked and as Donnie [Wahlberg] always says, the door’s open. We would love to have him and we will make sure the story is just right because Tom is so adamant about the story, as he should be and as we all should be,” Martin-Green told Woman’s World. “I think it would be great if we can have him, and I’m excited for whatever story it ends up being if he does come.”

She loves it when another BLUE BLOODS character comes on the show because it validates BOSTON BLUE.

“It’s almost like they give us their blessing when they come on and we make sure they know that…like, ‘Thank you for coming,’ because we know we’re standing on their shoulders. But I want everybody from BLUE BLOODS on this show but it’d be nice to see Tom,” she said.

When she started as Detective Lena Silver, she didn’t know whether fans would receive her and other fresh faces very well.

“We were all a little bit nervous because we didn’t know whether we would be accepted or not,” she admitted. “But they loved us.”

Once she found out what kind of character Silver is, Martin-Green knew she wanted to play her.

I loved that I could, first of all, be a woman of faith who is so smooth, so confident, so competent, so tenacious, and faith forward, family forward, community forward and duty oriented but also with a great sense of humor. I picked up on that when I was reading the pilot script, and I said, ‘Yo, this woman is funny. This woman is light on her feet, even though she deals with the heaviest things; she finds a way to have a coolness and a smoothness because she takes joy in what she does.’”

She continued, “I’ve never played anyone like that before and, of course, I love how Christianity is showcased in the show as well. I love seeing Judaism and the way the two are seated at the same table. All of it just felt really brave and new and refreshing and it felt like a perfect new iteration of BLUE BLOODS.”

Wahlberg, who plays Danny Raegan, says Selleck is very supportive of their spinoff and would love him to come on the show. However, Selleck previously said he doesn’t think he will guest star on the police series.

“I don’t know if I would do BOSTON BLUE. That’s another show,” he said last November. “I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure ‘Blue Bloods’ has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan.”

BOSTON BLUE Episode 1.8 “In the Name of the Father, and of the Son. . .”  was nominated for a Best Mature Audience Television/Streaming Movieguide® Award this year.

Part of the episode’s review reads, “Episode 8 of BOSTON BLUE: Season One is well-made, with excellent performances. It has a strong Christian, moral worldview. Characters attend church, pray and quote Scripture.”

BOSTON BLUE just had its finale. The next season will come out this fall.
