BLUE BLOODS spinoff series BOSTON BLUE will bring back Donnie Wahlberg and maybe even Tom Selleck.
In an interview with Parade, Wahlberg was asked if Selleck and other stars from BLUE BLOODS would occasionally drop in, whether on Zoom, FaceTime or even for guest star appearance.
“New York and Boston are really close,” Wahlberg told Parade. “They’re not that far apart. I like the way you asked the question. You covered a lot of possible ways for people to drop in on us. Yeah, BLUE BLOODS is important to the audience, it’s important to me, it’s important to Sonequa [Martin-Green, who plays Lena Peters, Danny Reagan’s new partner]. She’s a BLUE BLOODS fan. She’s my partner, and she’s a BLUE BLOODS fan. She wants to keep that legacy alive, as well.”
According to CBS, “In BOSTON BLUE, a universe expansion of the long-running top drama BLUE BLOODS, Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with Detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”
While speaking with Parade, Wahlberg didn’t want to disclose why his character relocated to Boston.
“I can’t give you the exact reason why today, because that would be a big spoiler,” he said. “But I would say this, as family-oriented as Danny is, he’s also always marched to the beat of his own drum. I think those two things can be true at the same time. He can march to the beat of his own drum, and it can still be about family.
“It’s going to be a journey and a process for him,” Wahlberg added. “He’s with the audience who says, ‘I can’t imagine Danny would move to Boston,’ well, neither can he. He’s with you. He’s going to have to figure this out because it’s a dramatic life change.”
The difference between Danny in BLUE BLOODS and Danny in BOSTON BLUE is that he will be on his own.
“I think he always was, but he has his own family, too,” Wahlberg explained. “It’s not just his dad and his brother and sister. He has sons, and he has responsibilities to them as well. I’ll just say the journey of developing this show, it’s really fun letting Danny be a fish out of water to be in this new world. It’s also important to remember where he comes from and what the BLUE BLOODS legacy is. We’re keeping all of that at the forefront of our thoughts as we build this thing.”
In an Instagram post, Wahlberg expressed his excitement to begin the journey of BOSTON BLUE.

“So excited to carry on the tradition, to share so many surprises, to answer some unanswered questions, and to welcome all of you — to #BostonBlue! The next chapter in the #BlueBloods legacy begins. I can’t wait. See you, CBS fall! 💙❤️🫡🙏🏼” Wahlberg wrote.
BOSTON BLUE hasn’t gotten an official premiere date, but it will air at 10/9c on CBS this fall.
