What You Need To Know:

BANDSLAM is the story of Will, a teenager who doesn’t fit because of an instance in his past that troubles him. A new school gives him a chance to start over, He gets involved in Bandslam, the city’s largest high school event where bands compete. Surprisingly, ex-cheerleader Charlotte befriends Will, and he’s able to use his knowledge and passion for music to help her band go up against a rival band. Will also meets an equally quirky outcast teen girl, Sa5m. They start a romance, but Will is awkward and unsure of himself.

BANDSLAM is an enjoyable, light movie that surprisingly steps into some deep emotional waters. The story takes non-cliché twists along the familiar “competition” theme prevalent in many teen movies. BANDSLAM has much to commend. There is mention of praying to God. Also, a character needs to ask forgiveness and changes her attitude about how she treats people. The directing has energy. The story is told extremely well with likeable characters. Also, the performances are very solid. There are a few profanities, however, and three instances of teenagers kissing. Otherwise, the movie is positive, fun and delightful.

More Detail:

BANDSLAM is the story of Will, a high school teenager who never fits in because of an instance in his past that continues to trouble him. When Will moves to a new school, he has a chance to start over and gets involved in Bandslam, the city’s largest high school event where bands compete. Surprisingly, ex-cheerleader Charlotte befriends Will, and he’s able to use his knowledge and passion for music to help her band go up against a rival band.

Will meets an equally quirky outcast teenage girl, Sam (she spells it “Sa5m” and tells him “the 5 is silent”). Will and Sam start a romance, but Will is awkward and unsure of himself.

Will finally thinks his life is turning around for the better just at the start of the band competition. However, Charlotte, the lead singer, quits and the new school discovers his past secret.

BANDSLAM is an enjoyable, light comedy that surprisingly steps into some deep emotional waters. Will is a great character who is both quirky and empathetic. This is an “underdog” movie that has the viewers rooting for the outcasts.

BANDLSAM has much to commend. There is mention of praying to God. Also, a character needs to ask forgiveness and then changes her attitude about how she treats people. The theme is accepting people who are the “outcasts” of society. The story takes non-cliché twists along the familiar “competition” theme prevalent in many teen movies. It also has a positive mother/son relationship as the mom struggles to “let go” of her son whom she has had to help for many years.

The directing in BANDLSAM has lots of energy. The music is great and the performances are very solid. The story is told extremely well, with likeable characters. HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL star Vanessa Hudgens turns in a good performance as the eccentric Sa5m. Lisa Kudrow is very good as Will’s single mom.

There are a few light exclamatory profanities, however, and there are three instances of teenagers kissing. Otherwise, the movie is positive, fun and delightful.
