By Movieguide® Editorial Staff
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mommies out there! Below is a list of awesome on-screen mommies who love their families…
1. Leigh Anne Touhy, THE BLIND SIDE
Leigh Anne Touhy knows a few things about family, faith and football.
In THE BLIND SIDE, Leigh Anne (Sandra Bullock) takes in a homeless teenager named Michael as her own son. In one iconic scene Leigh Anne says, “This team is your family Michael you have to protect them… you protect his blind side. When you look at him, you think of me [and] how you have my back.”
2. Elastigirl, INCREDIBLES 2
Being a working mom is certainly a stretch for many, including Elastigirl. However, this superhero gal doesn’t let obstacles get in her way, no matter how evil they might seem.
Elastigirl, aka Helen Parr (voiced by Holly Hunter), really comes to life in INCREDIBLES 2 where viewers see her wrestle with the work/life balance. Elastigirl is a prime example for many moms out there who aspire to do it all, but at the end of the day, must know what’s really important.
3. Gladys Stains, THE LEAST OF THESE
Gladys Stains (Shari Rigby) and her husband, Graham, left the comforts of home to minister to unreached people in India. Gladys teaches Indians proper hygiene and cares for their education, but her family’s murder makes her come to a crossroads of faith.
Gladys will remind viewers of Proverbs 31, where the author describes a woman who wakes up early, provides for her family and speaks with faithful wisdom.
4. Kate Baker, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN (2003)
Did someone say 12 children?!
Yes, that’s right. Kate Baker (Bonnie Hunt) didn’t dream of mothering 12 children and moving due to her husband’s football coaching, but it happened.
Despite the squabbles, injuries, sassing and occasional vomit, Kate loves her children uniquely and calls them by their name, just as our heavenly Father knows and loves us.
5. Terry Camp, I STILL BELIEVE
What if your son told you that he wanted to marry a girl with cancer? What if you never expected to have a child with special needs? These types of questions are what Shania Twain’s character comes face to face with in I STILL BELIEVE.
Terry Camp juggles it all, three sons, a husband and her home. Yet, with all the curve balls thrown her way, Terry and her husband, Tom, look to God to guide their steps.
6. Marmee March, LITTLE WOMEN (2019)
“For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.” – Luke 12:27 (NIV)
This scripture perfectly sums up Marmee March (Laura Dern), who leads with a servant-heart. Marmee loves her four, wildly different, daughters and puts their needs above her own. Like any mom, Marmee isn’t perfect, but she presses into her imperfections to grow and be an example to her loved ones.

7. Maria Von Trapp, THE SOUND OF MUSIC
In her show-stopping performance, Julie Andrews goes from a governess to stepmother in this beloved musical. But more than her vocal talents, Maria’s knack for cultivating a love in this military family demonstrates that Jesus is alive and well within her!
8. Brooke Taylor, FACING THE GIANTS
Brooke Taylor (Shannen Fields) wanted to start a family with her husband, Grant, but couldn’t get pregnant. After struggling for what seemed to be eons, God blessed the Taylors with a child. Brooke’s love and appreciation for her family only grew after her immense pain and sense of longing. Although we don’t always know the future, Brooke’s motherhood story reminds us that if we fix our eyes on Him, He will bless us in ways we never expected.
9. Frankie Heck, THE MIDDLE
THE MIDDLE’s Frankie Heck (Patricia Heaton) is wholly devoted to her weird little family who lives in the middle of nowhere. Frankie makes personal sacrifices to give her children what they need. She also strives to improve herself by changing careers and pursuing her dreams. She adores her somewhat aloof husband, and together, they show that any family can make it work, despite their circumstances.
10. Mary, THE CHOSEN: The Wedding Gift
If you entertain, even in the slightest, you know that it’s a problem if your guests don’t have anything to drink… In this compelling episode of THE CHOSEN, Mary asks her son Jesus to find more wine and in return, He performs a miracle.
No one else will have a motherhood story like Mary. However, scripture teaches that Mary “treasured” her Son’s childhood even though she knew God’s plan for Him would cause her grief. Mary’s story reminds us to take a page out of her book and trust that God will take care of our children in greater ways than we can.
11. Joyce Smith, BREAKTHROUGH (2019)
“This is the confidence we have before him: If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us” – 1 John 5:14 (CSB).
Joyce Smith (Chrissy Metz) is a prayer warrior mom to the max! After a tragic accident involving her son, Joyce prays for a miracle and God provides. Her story begs the question, are we praying for our children even when times aren’t hard?
Use Joyce’s story opportunity to evaluate your own prayer life for your family. How can you meet God halfway?
